Here are the California COVID rules changing next week

California state health authorities on Monday announced they are loosening some COVID-19 mandates next week, including ending the indoor masking requirement for vaccinated people.

The changes come as the state sees a steady decline in COVID-19 cases numbers following an omicron-driven surge that triggered a statewide return to indoor masking.

Now, though some hospitals are still over capacity, numbers are either plateauing or declining in most of the state, officials said, adding that California has also seen a 65% drop in case rates since omicron’s peak.

By now, you probably have heard that the nation’s first case of the Omicron variant has been found in California. Here are three things to know about the news:

The infected individual returned home to San Francisco from South Africa on Nov. 22 and tested positive Monday, officials said. The person was fully vaccinated and experienced mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization.

The patient is self-quarantining. Close contacts have been identified and have tested negative so far, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The case was confirmed by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, with genomic sequencing conducted at UC San Francisco.

Citing privacy, health officials did not release many details about the individual. Gov. Gavin Newsom did say the person was between 18 and 49 years old. For the time being, the discovery of the variant will not spark new health orders in San Francisco, officials said.

Victim's Families Could Settle In Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash

A settlement is under consideration over unauthorized sharing of photos of the aftermath of the devastating crash that killed loved ones.

Families of Christina Mauser and John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli would share a $2.5 million settlement if terms are agreed to, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors say.

Under the proposed settlement, Matthew Mauser would receive $1.25 million and siblings J.J. Altobelli and Alexis Altobelli would share another $1.25 million, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Mauser's wife, Christine, and the Altobellis' mother, father and younger sister -- Keri, John and Alyssa -- died in the Jan. 26, 2020, crash that also killed Bryant, his daughter Gianna and three others.

A report from the County Council recommended the settlement to "avoid further litigation costs," according to The Times.

The county has already spent approximately $1,292,592 in fees and legal costs in the two cases, The Times reported. #spmgmedia

Fashion mogul Serge Azria has sold an oceanfront estate in Malibu, Calif., for $177 million.

The deal sets a record in the state of California, and it is the second-highest priced home sold in the U.S., following billionaire Ken Griffin’s roughly $238 million purchase of a New York City penthouse in 2019.

PCH reopens in Malibu after standoff involving sheriff's deputies, armed person in RV

A standoff involving Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and an armed person in a recreational vehicle Saturday morning prompted the hourslong closure of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, authorities said.

PCH was shut down between Trancas Canyon Road and Morning View Drive, the Sheriff's Department tweeted shortly before 10 a.m.

LAX launches pilot program for United Airlines travelers to pre-schedule TSA screening

LAX announced a pilot program Wednesday for United Airlines travelers departing from terminals 7 and 8 to pre-schedule a 15-minute window to go through the security screening checkpoint.

The LAX Fast Lane program will be available from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 90 days, ending on Jan. 18, 2022.

These California area codes will require 10-digit dialing starting Sunday

In California, the following area codes will switch to 10-digit dialing:

209: Stockton, Modesto and the surrounding areas
530: northern California regions, including the Sacramento Valley, Shasta Cascade and the northern Sierra Nevada
562: Long Beach and surrounding areas in Orange County
626: most of the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding area, including Pasadena
650: most of San Mateo County and part of Santa Clara County, including Palo Alto
707: the north coast, including Santa Rosa, Napa and Vallejo
925: areas in the East Bay and parts of Alameda County
949: southern Orange County
951: parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties
Residents residing in those area codes will have to dial all 10 digits for any calls — including local numbers. Calls made using only seven digits will not be completed; users will be instructed to hang up and try again using the correct 10-digit format.

Some callers also may be required to manually add a 1 before the three-digit area code, including those dialing from landlines or wired phones. Most cellphones already add a 1 in front of a dialed area code automatically.

At the 24th annual State of the City Address, Mayor James Bozajian discussed ongoing building projects, pandemic response and honored the "Citizens of the Year."

The City of Calabasas was incorporated 30 years ago, on April 5 1991. Bozajian offered the first Calabasas state of the city address in 1999, during his first term as mayor.

John and Joanne Suwara, "the ultimate power couple," moved to Calabasas in 1975 and have since lived in the same Malibu Canyon home. The couple was recognized for their long-standing commitment to the city through involvement with Calabasas schools, local government and the community.

The couple founded the Calabasas Coalition in 2015, an organization that helps inform and mobilize residents on political issues that may affect the city.

"We have been able to unite and inform residents of Calabasas about issues that affect their quality of life, and were looking forward to continuing to work to be the voice of the community," Joanne Sawara said in a video message.

The couple has been involved in the community in many other ways. John Suwara has been a scout leader, little league baseball and youth basketball coach in Calabasas. He started a boys volleyball club at Calabasas High School and served as president to a girls volleyball club in the area.

Joanne Suwara worked as a fifth grade teacher in the Las Virgenes Unified School District for 22 years and served as the business manager for the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce. #spmgcalabasas
