Today, our city pauses to honor the life and legacy of former Mayor Robert “Bob” Foster, and our community is holding Nancy, his family, and all who loved him close in our hearts.
Bob Foster devoted his life to public service—from his early days in Brooklyn to a distinguished career in California government and the energy sector. He helped advance statewide energy-efficiency legislation, led Southern California Edison as president, and later chaired the California Independent System Operator.
Elected as the 27th Mayor of Long Beach in 2006, Bob championed fiscal responsibility, public safety, and environmental stewardship. Over two terms, he worked to stabilize city finances, strengthen our police force, and confront pollution and goods-movement challenges at the port.
His dedication extended beyond City Hall, serving as a trustee of the California State University system and teaching as a “Leader-in-Residence” at San José State University.
Our city is better because he cared deeply for it, and his impact will be felt for generations. We honor his legacy and wish him peace.
