💜 In Loving Memory of Violet St. Cyr 💜

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear Violet, who spent 25 years serving Waltham students and staff in our cafeterias. Violet was so much more than a “lunch lady.” She was a mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt, and an incredible friend. She was funny, light-hearted, and always smiling, and boy, did she love to go on walks. In the kitchen, she would spend hours pulling dough, making homemade pizza, and calzones for the students. Violet would help anywhere that was needed, come in early, stay late, or both. She made everyone around her laugh and feel welcome. Violet was truly the BEST of the BEST!

Violet loved her job, and it showed. She was dedicated, joyful, and brought sunshine into every single day. To know her was to love her. She was a blessing to our schools and our program. We will miss her laughter, her warmth, and her heart.

Thank you, Violet, for everything you gave to our team and to the Waltham community. Rest in peace, dear friend 💜 Apron off, Angel wings on 😇

KICK CANCER

All levels of Waltham High School girls soccer took part in an annual Crossbar Challenge Monday in honor of those battling cancer or loved ones who have passed away.

Players from WHS varsity, junior varsity and junior varsity B teams took 20 shots from outside the penalty area, hoping to hit the crossbar. Fundraiser supporters had pledged money for each crossbar struck.

“All money raised is donated directly to Dana-Farber/The Jimmy Fund, an incredible local organization dedicated to adult and pediatric cancer research and patient care,” said varsity head coach Sydney Lindstrom.

The effort has raised more than $10,000 in recent years.

Freshman varsity player Chloe Mancini hit three crossbars. Like the other girls, she wore colored ponytail ribbons for various cancers.

Pink was for breast cancer and the other ribbon was in support of Waltham brain cancer warrior Declan Lyons, whose dad Bobby works at Waltham High.

But Chloe was also honoring her grandmother Cecilia, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019 and died in 2021.

“Everyone knows someone affected by cancer,” Chloe said. “This is a nice way to remember my grandmother, who taught me to be kind to everyone I meet.”

Her mom Julie beamed with pride. “I know Cecilia would have been a huge fan of this team and watching Chloe play for the Hawks.”

HOORAY FOR HOCKEY

On Monday, Waltham Youth Hockey players and coaches joined Waltham recreation and elected officials to celebrate the opening of a new parking lot at 295 Totten Pond Road.

The Veterans Memorial Skating Rink Pedestrian Access Improvements Project involves a new parking lot with a total of 63 spaces, a repaved section of road, a relocated driveway, a new traffic signal and improved pedestrian access.

The impetus for the $2.7 million project came from Councilor at Large Randy LeBlanc, a longtime Waltham youth hockey coach and supporter.

Veterans Memorial Skating Rink is owned by the state, which leases it to the city for use by youth hockey groups and other rink users.
