The Salvation Army of Waltham rang in the holiday season Saturday with the launch of its 2025 Red Kettle Campaign, a community tradition that supports local families year-round.

The kickoff celebration began at 9 a.m. in front of Waltham City Hall, bringing together Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy, local business leaders, elected officials and residents to raise awareness of vital social services offered through the organization.

The Red Kettle Campaign funds programs providing food, shelter, utility assistance and holiday gifts to Waltham residents in need. This year’s local fundraising goal is $70,000, according to organizers.

National Grid crews have launched work to replace the aging natural gas main serving parts of Seminole Avenue, Mokema Avenue and Lake Street in Waltham, with 40 homes and businesses scheduled for upgrades over the next several months.

The construction — which started Nov. 3 and is expected to continue through Feb. 10 — will cover 7–91 Seminole Ave., 2–23 Mokema Ave. and 270–285 Lake St., weather permitting. Alongside the new main, workers will install updated service piping from the street to customer gas meters, part of a citywide effort to boost gas system reliability and safety.

City Council will take up a public hearing this week for Middlesex Integrative Medicine, a planned ma*****na dispensary at 305 Second Ave.

MIM received a special permit from City Council in 2019, but returned before the council earlier this year to modify the permit, requesting a smaller building footprint. It has also notified the committee it intends to operate a recreational dispensary only and does not intend to continue with the medical ma*****na dispensary at the location requested in the original permit.

Victor Ventura Flores was scheduled to appear via Zoom at Waltham District Court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 22 as a part of an ongoing case against him.

In fact, Waltham District Court Judge Ellen M. Caulo, who is presiding over his case, had previously issued an official legal request to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to make sure Ventura Flores — at the time in ICE custody — could appear in court.

Ventura Flores, however, didn’t appear for his Oct. 22 hearing.
