Scattered thunderstorms, a few possibly strong, may develop Saturday afternoon and evening with a passing cold front. Behind it, cooler and drier weather settles in Sunday through much of next week, with crisp mornings and comfortable afternoons. Highs return to the low/mid-70s with lows dipping into the 40s and 50s by early next week, before moderating slightly again by midweek.

Global Partners, an independent energy supplier and retail operator based in Massachusetts, has filed a lawsuit against the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in Suffolk Superior Court.

The company alleges that MassDOT violated state public records laws by failing to provide documents related to the 35-year service plaza lease awarded to Applegreen, an Irish company backed by Blackstone Infrastructure Partners. MassDOT aims to sign the contract by early November.

A test patch of pavement poured in a Waltham parking lot on Aug. 13 marked the global debut of Uberbinder’s new, low-carbon asphalt.

The patch — equivalent in size to two parking spots — is a case-study in how early-stage innovations, through the right kind of public–private collaboration, can make breakthrough discoveries possible.

This discovery in particular promises to lower the greenhouse gas emissions of roadbuilding, helping to achieve the global effort of Net Zero Carbon by 2050.

Shawn Laswell believed “art is for everyone to look at,” said his mother, Donna Laswell. He meant this literally, painting murals on neglected fences and walls around the city. Going by the name Spectacle Spectacle, he hung his signature vinyl LP records, splattered in vivid colors, on utility poles all around Waltham, more than 2,000 of them over 15 years. Anyone walking by could enjoy them, and many did – some even taking the discs to decorate their homes.

Beloved for his generosity and free spirit, Shawn died unexpectedly on July 24 at the age of 52. His passing prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes across the community.

The city is reminding residents that using fire pits for open burning is prohibited under Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection regulations.

State law bans open burning in cities such as Waltham due to public health and safety concerns. The MassDEP regulates open burning to reduce air pollution and wildfire risks. Recreational use of fire pits, chimineas or other outdoor wood-burning devices that emit smoke into the open air is not allowed within city limits unless used for cooking.

The Waltham District Court granted three residents Lavallee hearings this past week as a result of the recent statewide public defender strike. Under the Lavallee protocol, the court must dismiss the defendants’ cases if it cannot provide them with legal representation within 45 days of their arraignments.
