“Who wants my useless wife for ten dollars?”
The man laughed into the microphone as if humiliating his wife was simply another part of the charity auction.
The ballroom fell silent.
A few guests let out uneasy laughs.
Others lowered their eyes to their champagne glasses, acting as though they hadn't heard a thing.
At a nearby table, his wife sat wearing a midnight-blue silk dress, diamonds resting around her neck, while quiet pain filled her eyes.
The smile she had been forcing slowly faded.
Her lips parted, but no words came.
She kept looking toward her husband on the stage, hoping he would reveal it was all just a joke.
He never did.
Instead, his smile grew even wider as he enjoyed the uncomfortable silence.
“Come on,” he said. “Surely someone can spare ten dollars.”
Her hand trembled against the tablecloth.
Then the sharp scrape of a chair echoed across the marble floor.
Every head in the ballroom turned.
A younger man in a black tuxedo rose from the back of the room.
He looked first at the stage, then at the woman—not with pity, but with respect.
His voice remained calm.
“One million… for dinner with her.”
The entire ballroom froze.
The husband’s smile disappeared instantly.
The wife slowly turned toward the stranger, her eyes beginning to shine.
And the younger man added, “Because she saved my life.”
