While the Bram Stoker issue has been postponed, there will still be a fantastic new issue of Dracula Beyond Stoker available in November. Full info on that will be coming soon, but we’re excited to tell you that one of the contributors - writer/actor/magician Patrick Terry - will be performing “Houdini Speaks to the Living” this month (Aug 7-15, 17-22) at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

“The year is 1924. Harry Houdini is at the peak of his fame, touring the country with performance-lectures that expose fraudulent mediums and challenge the growing Spiritualist movement. At the same moment, his friend (and eventual adversary) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is lecturing in passionate defense of Spiritualism, convinced it represents a profound philosophical and moral evolution for humanity. Watch these two legends battle out the true nature of magic, science and faith through a historically based, largely verbatim play from writer-director Beth Burns and writer-magician Patrick Terry.”

Whitby is a magical town for a Dracula fan! Everywhere you look there is something to entertain, enlighten, or astound.

But even without the Dracula connection, the Abbey is awe inspiring.

Book haul from 2 weeks in Edinburgh and Whitby.

You may have guessed that I have difficulty leaving anything Dracula on the store shelf (although on this trip I was forced to due to luggage constraints)

I’ve recently been getting most of my new book recs from and since he recently called Trad Wife by Sarah Langan his favorite book of the year so far I had to grab it when I saw it (it doesn’t hit the US until September)

The Malt Whisky Murders was an impulse buy at a whisky/gift shop in Edinburgh Castle. I started it on the flight home and have been enjoying it immensely.

Judging by my reflection, I may have been turned during my stay in Whitby.

Regular DBS contributor Brian Forrest has recently edited a new edition of The Black Vampyre. He examines all of the “firsts” that the story achieved - first American vampire, first black vampire, first staking, and many more - with his usual Toothpickings humor.

Whether or not you’ve read the story before, this edition is well worth picking up.

You can also hear Brian talk about it on the latest episode of The Ghostly Gallery podcast.
