A new Innovation Center at Trumbull Career & Technical Center expands industrial technology training, career exploration and behavioral health services. Officials say the center is designed to connect students with in-demand careers and help address regional workforce needs.
Plus, Youngstown's Board of Control approved a $1.27 million state grant to improve roadway access to the Crab Creek industrial corridor. The project will add 950 feet of roadway connecting U.S. Route 62 and Albert Street with North Garland Avenue.
And Nelly and Elvis Costello headline a busy stretch of concerts in the Mahoning Valley. Nelly will perform Sunday at Covelli Centre, while Costello will take the stage Tuesday at Packard Music Hall.

Eight months before Tyson Gentry breaks his neck, he writes words of encouragement for a stranger facing a life-changing injury. At his lowest point, those same words unexpectedly find their way back to him.

Author and motivational speaker Tyson Gentry joins Jim Tressel on the “It’s All About the Team” podcast to recount the events surrounding the spinal cord injury he suffers while playing football at Ohio State and the message that helps change his outlook during his recovery.

Gentry says the story begins during Ohio State’s 2005 fall camp, when motivational speaker Rosemarie Rossetti asks players to write letters of encouragement for patients undergoing rehabilitation at Dodd Hall. Gentry writes a message intended to help someone he does not know through one of the most difficult periods of their life.

Eight months later, Gentry breaks his neck and undergoes two surgeries. Following the second procedure, he experiences severe pain related to his spinal cord injury and reaches what he describes as his breaking point.

The next morning, a nurse familiar with Dodd Hall finds the letter Gentry wrote months earlier and returns it to him. The message tells its reader to never give up, overcome adversity and remember that others believe in them. Gentry recognizes his signature and realizes he now has to live by the same advice he once wrote for someone else.

Gentry says his condition begins improving from that point. Within seven days, he moves to a step-down unit, and a week later, he begins rehabilitation.

The Hopewell Theatre presents “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill,” a production centered on one of Billie Holiday’s final performances. Set in a Philadelphia bar in 1959, the show combines more than a dozen musical numbers with stories and reminiscences about the legendary singer.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 18 and 19, and 2 p.m. Sept. 13 and 20.
