Hard work of any description be it human be it animal is entitled to some sort of a reward. What reward do you give to yourself as a single entity not as -members? You feed and cherish your body yourself with as good a nutrition as your circumstances and time afford. You sit down and catch your breath whenever you are able during the activities of the day. You may stop for a refreshment: coffee, tea, a soft drink or some other treat.

Turning to sub-sections of one's being: The head: It works frantically to solve problems that arise as obstacles set in your path. math problems, logistics; how to go from one place to another. The mouth: it speaks, assists in breathing both inhaling and exhaling breath and air. The hands: both rough and intricate work and maneuvers all day long. But what reward for the often neglected overlooked step child YOUR FEET. They are both rugged and delicate at the same time. Rugged in supporting the entire bodily structure that rests upon them: delicate in the tender sensitivity of the soles equipped collectively with a half million nerve ends. What reward for the taken for granted feet; that is till they hurt or ache. Your entire bodily health is affected by feet health.

You are too embarrassed about our feet. They are a private member not to be trifled with or touched. Young people feel that their feet are as intimate as their ge****ls and hence guard them jealously. Go ahead. Later in life you may discover te need to attend to their needs more readily as you outgrow your feet hangups and shyness and finally treat them as equal partners with the rest of your external anatomy.

So are you gonna let societal norms dictate what becomes of your up to the present neglected feet? Are you gonna ignore them for the rest of your life an treat them as of little or lesser importance than they deserve.I'm too embarrassed or I don't want that old dude touching my oh so sacred so precious so sancrosanct [(especially of a principle, place, or routine) regarded as too important or valuable to be interfered with.]? Will you deny an ULTIMATE endorphin high because of silly hangups; that guy is fat short and ugly and wants to massage my feet for hours....he'z weird. Go ahead and laugh. The joke is on ignorant poor YOU.

Antianxiety Foot Massage
By John Mramor

Originally published in Massage & Bodywork magazine, July/August 2010.

There is a growing body of research pertaining to the effects of various forms of foot massage—including reflexology—on anxiety, depression, immune system response, nausea, pain, and stress. A general review of the literature between the years 1999–2007 found that foot work is demonstrating significant outcomes within a broad spectrum of populations, from postsurgical patients to people with cancer to middle-aged women to hospitalized patients.1

This research is encouraging for hospice patients, who suffer not only from the aforementioned complaints, but also from an assortment of maladies, including symptoms from disease, side effects of medication, psychosocial/emotional issues, or spiritual angst. The two most prevalent complaints within the hospice community are anxiety and pain. These are typically the most unsettling and disturbing sensations across the multidimensional planes of existence, as this author’s 12-year, full-time, professional association with hospice continues to prove.

Massage Therapy for Depression

Expert testimony
The takeaway
What is massage therapy?
During massage therapy, a therapist will manipulate your muscles and other soft tissues to enhance their function, promote relaxation, or both.

Massage therapy has been used in China for more than 3,000 years. Some practitioners believe it can help ease feelings of depression. They suggest that touch releases hormones in your body that create a sense of emotional connection. Massage may help calm your mind and improve your mood, as well as ease physical aches and pains.

While more research is needed, scientists have found evidence to support the idea that massage therapy can provide mental health benefits. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, clinical trials suggest that massage therapy may help relieve depression. It may also be a helpful addition to your overall treatment plan.

How can massage therapy help relieve depression?
When your muscles and connective tissues become stiff or rigid, it can cause pain and limit your movement. Massage therapy can help relieve this tension in your muscles and connective tissues. It also increases your blood flow and promotes relaxation.

If you have depression, massage therapy probably won’t cure your condition. But it may help relieve the physical symptoms associated with it. For example, massage may help alleviate sluggishness, back pain, joint pain, and muscle aches. It can also help relieve fatigue and sleeping problems.

What does massage therapy involve?
During massage therapy, your therapist will rub, stretch, and apply pressure to muscles in your body. Some styles of massage involve over-the-clothes touching. Others involve direct contact with your skin, often with scented oils. Some involve acupuncture needles, warm stones, or complex twisting poses.

Here are some common types of massage used in the United States:

Swedish massage:In this common method, your therapist will apply smooth, circular, kneading actions to your muscles.
Chair massage: In this method, you will sit on a special chair and lean forward into a headrest. This is a good introduction to massage, since the sessions are usually short and don’t require you to remove any clothing.
Deep tissue massage: Your massage therapist may use this method to treat tight muscles caused by stress or other problems. They will focus on the muscles closest to your bones, as well as their connective tissues.
Shiatsu:In this technique, your therapist will apply firm pressure to specific points on your body, much like acupuncture. The pressure is more firm than in many types of massage, but it rarely produces stiffness afterward.
Reflexology: In this type of massage, your therapist will apply pressure to areas of your feet that are believed to correspond with other systems and organs in your body.
Aromatherapy massage: In this method, your therapist will combine massage with scented oils to help reduce stress or boost your energy.
Hot stone massage: During this method, your therapist will place warm flat stones on your body to help relax your muscles. They will also apply pressure to the stones to relieve muscle tension.

Benefits of massage therapy
When performed by a trained professional, massage therapy is generally safe for most people. You’ll find that it provides immediate gratification. You may feel relaxed and calm from the time your massage begins. You can combine it with more conventional treatment for depression, such as medication and psychotherapy.

Limits of massage therapy
On its own, massage therapy won’t provide long-term relief from your depression. It doesn’t address the emotional or chemical problems that are causing your symptoms in a way that can be sustained. It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for more conventional treatment options.

What do the expert say?
Dr. Mason Turner, chief of psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente hospital in San Francisco, suggests that massage therapy can help treat depression by relieving muscle tension and improving physical health. Massage, he said, helps strengthen your body-mind connection.

“Anything that helps the person connect their mind and body together can be helpful,” he told Healthline.

The practice can help improve your overall health and aid in stress management. It can help relax your body, which, in turn, can relax your mind too.

People in Western Civilization view their feet as sacred territory where virtually nobody is welcome. Other cultures are less inhibited and at ease about their feet. The sad truth is that feet health is neglected because of social standards and mores. Feet DESERVE at least as much attention as any other part of the human anatomy but are virtually overlooked for numerous reasons; reasons of upbringing and society standards based on myth and legend and not facts and figures. You your feet deserve better than you are giving them. they are the DOOR to your entire central nervous system and the Chinese discovered that 5000 years ago. How long will it be before YOU discover it?

It's normal and ok for guys to be shy or even embarrassed about their feet but there is no need to do so.If you want a gf or family to massage your feet then go ahead...you will get whatever comes...only someone that has devoted time and deep thought can achieve the desired effect of an endorphin HIGH which will reduce aches and pains and increase a sense of happiness and well-being. The fact that 250,000 nerve ends are located on the bottom of each foot is incidental. That's where the action is and only somebody who knows what they are doing and have done so for a VERY long time is truly qualified to achieve the desired effect. So GET OVER IT and accept the leadership of somebody who really cares about you and yes about YOUR precious feet and your general sense of well-being.

The feet are the step child of the members of the body. Overlooked neglected and taken for granted they do far more work than the celebrated hands do. The hands dangle and hang around while the feet are going up and down here and there and everywhere.

We all know that a short foot massage every now and then can really help us relax, particularly after a long day of standing up and walking around, when our feet tend to swell up. Sure, everyone enjoys it, but does it really have any benefits other than making us feel a bit more relaxed and relieving some of the pain?

There are a several different massage techniques that all promise certain health benefits. Traditional therapeutic techniques focus on relaxing the muscles and joints; acupressure seeks to improve general health and energy flow by acting upon specific pressure points; aromatherapy uses scented oils and relaxing music to add an additional element of relaxation by acting upon multiple senses; and reflexology seeks to improve internal organ function by massaging specific areas of the foot.

There are many claims, some fairly outrageous, about what a simple massage can do for you, but there is very little evidence to support them. We will take a look at some of the benefits of foot massage that are supported by actual scientific research – benefits that are either immediate or can be seen and felt after a couple of weeks, even with as little as two to three sessions per week.

1. It’s good for your s*x life
All it takes is some massage oil, a few scented candles and light music to set the perfect mood for a night of passionate lo******ng. A foot massage is a selfless gift to your significant other, it helps them forget about minor annoyances they’ve had to deal with throughout the day and it is a great form of foreplay.

The feet are a great starting point since they can cause mild arousal and offer easy transition to more powerful erogenous zones like the back of the knees and inner thighs.

2. Improves circulation
Due to a mostly sedentary lifestyle we have become unaccustomed to using our muscles on a regular basis. The muscles in the feet get hardly any exercise and circulation is often impaired by tight and uncomfortable shoes. A 10–20 minute massage session before going to bed can greatly improve circulation in the lower extremities, which is particularly important for people suffering from diabetes.

3. Helps prevent foot and ankle injuries
Massaging the feet can help with joint pain and aid recovery after an injury, as well as reduce muscle soreness. However, when massage is combined with foot and ankle strengthening exercises and stretching it can prevent future injuries, as well as speed up recovery of existing injuries. A short session three to five times a week will ensure that you minimize the risk of injury. We all have our moments of clumsiness, but a strengthened and flexible ankle and foot ensures that we can avoid unpleasant injuries.

4. Reduces the effects of depression and anxiety
Looking at some of the studies that have been done on the effects of reflexology, it seems that this type of foot massage goes beyond simply putting people in a relaxed state for the duration of the massage.

Frequent sessions have been shown to significantly reduce anxiety in cancer patients. The techniques can be learned fairly quickly and can serve as an effective way of dealing with depression and anxiety.

5. Helps with headaches and migraines
Woman with anxiety
A study conducted in Denmark showed that people suffering from headaches and migraines showed great improvement after receiving reflexology treatments. The test subjects stopped taking their medication, and three months after completing their treatments, 65% had reduced symptoms while a small number had been cured. It is believed that those who had reflexology foot massages managed to make additional positive lifestyle changes that may have contributed to their impressive results.

6. Lowers blood pressure
High blood pressure has become fairly common in modern men and women. It can be caused by a number of things such as stress and an unhealthy diet, but in most cases it has no particular cause and is believed to be a result of environmental factors and genetics. A study conducted on healthcare staff working with elderly people suffering from dementia – a job that is highly stressful and both physically and mentally taxing – showed that a 10-minute foot massage session up to three times a week resulted in improved mood, less anxiety and lower blood pressure.

7. Helps with flat feet and plantar fasciitis
People with flat feet do not have a normal foot arch due to ligament laxity, which causes the arch to collapse. It can have no major effect on a person, but some people experience foot pain after even mild physical activity due to flat feet. Chronic heel pain can be caused by inflammation or deterioration of the plantar fascia (the connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot). Regular foot exercise coupled with deep massage, where you apply strong pressure on the arch, can help significantly lessen the pain and even cure these conditions.

8. Helps alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause
The most common symptoms suffered during PMS include feelings of sadness and unhappiness, irritability, anxiety, tension, insomnia, fatigue, headaches and mood swings. Most of these symptoms can be alleviated with daily foot massages during this period.

Getting a foot massage from boyfriend
In the same vein, symptoms of menopause, which are similar to those suffered during PMS with the addition of hot flashes and depression, can be effectively minimized with regular massages.

9. Reduces effects of edema in pregnant women
Edema, that is, swelling due to fluid retention in the feet and ankles, is very common in pregnant women, mostly in the last trimester. This condition can be combated by massaging the feet on a daily basis, coupled with plenty of rest and the right diet.

As you can see, foot massage is a lot more beneficial to both physical and mental health than most people realize. Although professional massages can sometimes be a bit costly, there are plenty of resources available online that can help you learn a thing or two about the different styles of foot massage. It only takes some 10–20 minutes a few times a week, so you and your significant other can reap the tremendous benefits of foot massage without a lot of work.
