I get a lot of questions about how I mix without a computer generated operating system and I’m always happy to explain, the “old way” of mixing. The early days some mixes used to have a “all hands on” approach when you had to use several people in the control room to help make the fader changes.

My system utilizes 8 stereo sub mixes, 4 mute group controls, 8 aux sends, 40+ channels and 2 stereo master faders. Knowing my system, #1 I record the tracks knowing where I want them to end up in the final mix. My style still requires changes throughout the song if needed but with the options the mixer offers, it can be done smoothly and effectively.

From this video my right hand is making the mute group and subtle changes. My left hand controls the 2 track recorder and the multi-track recorder and any fader change that requires two hands.

The August rock band Friday video this week, "Name of Love", is dedicated to Joe "Doc" Jones on the weekend of his Celebration of Life, he sent me a message the first time he heard this song how he liked this song and the surprising end to the guitar solo... Joe was a great drummer and friend.......
