🚨🚨🚨Train Derailment Update🚨🚨🚨

Morgan County Train Derailment Operational Update as of June 15:

Morgan County Emergency Management Agency continues to lead response operations following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in Morgan County. We continue to coordinate with TDEC, EPA, TEMA, local officials, and Norfolk Southern with response activities and protect public health and safety.

Air and water monitoring continue by federal partners and Norfolk Southern contractors. EPA and Norfolk Southern air monitoring has not detected ethanol, and no drinking water issues have been identified at this time. Localized odors may still be noticeable near the river due to the volatile nature of ethanol, but monitoring confirms community air quality remains within safe levels.

As a precaution, TDEC has issued a temporary contact advisory for portions of the Emory River due to the ethanol spill. Visitors should avoid contact with the river in Morgan County near Camp Austin Bridge, the Nemo Picnic Area upstream of the Catoosa Road bridge, and closer to the derailment site near Emory Heights Road until further notice.

The fire is out and continues to be monitored. Trains are moving through the area on one operational track, while derailed cars remain off to the side. Conditions appear stable at this time.

Morgan County EMA will continue working with TDEC, EPA, TEMA, TWRA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Norfolk Southern, and local partners to support environmental monitoring, public safety, response coordination, and remediation oversight. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Now we’ve got fighters, warriors, military flyovers, and a UFC octagon on the South Lawn.

Somewhere a scientist is probably preparing a peer-reviewed study on how much cage fighting is required to reverse four years of damage and confusion.

⚠️ CAMPGROUND TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO CONTAMINATED WATER FROM TRAIN DERAILMENT🚨🚨🚨

The National Park Service has temporarily closed Rock Creek Campground after increasing ethanol concentrations were detected in both the water and air upstream from the campground.

According to park officials, the closure was put in place out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of visitor safety while crews assess the extent of the damage and continue cleanup efforts.

At this time, there is no announced timeline for reopening. The campground will remain closed until the situation has been fully evaluated and cleanup operations have been completed.

Visitors planning trips to the area are encouraged to check for updates before traveling.

🚂 MORGAN COUNTY TRAIN DERAILMENT VS. EAST PALESTINE: HOW DO THEY COMPARE?

When a train derails, it’s impossible not to think about what happened in East Palestine, Ohio.

In February 2023, a derailment involving hazardous materials led to evacuations, environmental concerns, national media attention, and years of ongoing debate about the long-term impacts on the community.

Now, Morgan County is dealing with a derailment of its own.

At this point, many questions remain unanswered. What was being transported? Were any hazardous materials involved? What are the potential environmental impacts? What do local residents need to know moving forward?

To be clear, there is currently no indication that the Morgan County derailment is on the same scale as East Palestine. However, the comparison is one many residents are already making as officials continue their investigation.
