Providence rents are reaching levels that would have sounded unbelievable a few years ago.

The average rent is now around $2,150 per month, and for many working families, that number is starting to feel impossible.

Rent was around $500. Electric bills felt like $47. No $300 cell phone plans. No app subscriptions quietly draining your account. You could hit Ponderosa or a local spot that gave you a full meal for a fair price and still have money left over.

Life wasn’t perfect, but it was simpler.

That kind of income back then actually felt like you were getting ahead.

When I moved in, the landlord promised several things, including providing an A/C. I had my own, but he told me he didn’t want it in the window, so I ended up selling it. Yesterday, I came home and it was 89 degrees inside.

I asked if there were screens for the windows and got ignored.

I’m not the type to keep asking over and over, especially for things that were already discussed or should be basic living conditions.

On top of that, the owner lives in the property and I’m constantly being woken up at all hours. When their washer and dryer run, it vibrates through my apartment. I also smell cigarette smoke inside, but I feel like there’s nothing I can really say.

At this point, I’m tired, hot, frustrated, and honestly over it. I’m considering telling them to use my security deposit as my last month’s rent and just leaving, especially since I never signed the lease.

I’ve already dealt with a previous landlord charging $1,350 for a place with no kitchen. It feels like tenants are being squeezed more and more while being expected to accept poor living conditions.

I’m exhausted and worried I may end up back in my car again.

A couple who relocated to Rhode Island last year recently contacted us about a security-deposit issue.

They moved out of their two-bedroom apartment approximately three months ago. According to the tenants, they paid their rent on time, followed the terms of their lease, and thoroughly cleaned the apartment before returning possession.

Despite repeatedly contacting both the landlord and the property-management company, they say they have not received their security deposit, an itemized list of deductions, or a clear explanation. Their calls and messages are now being ignored.

They feel frustrated, cheated, and unsure about what steps to take next.

Has anyone experienced something similar in Rhode Island? What advice or resources would you share with tenants facing this situation?

Requests for help paying electric bills in Rhode Island increased 182% in May compared with the same month last year.

That number should stop all of us.

More families are falling behind. More people are worried about shutoff notices. More Rhode Islanders are being forced to decide which bill gets paid first.

The Good Neighbor Energy Fund provides one-time emergency utility assistance to income-eligible households that need help paying a bill or avoiding a shutoff but do not qualify for other state or federal programs.

The application deadline has been extended to June 30.

Call 211 to find out whether you qualify or visit the United Way of Rhode Island website.

You can talk about the Strait of Hormuz. You can talk about global oil markets. You can talk about supply chains. But at the end of the day, people do not care about a geography lesson when it costs $70 to fill up the car!

45 and 47, sir, you need to step your game up snd get these gas price back in line for the American people.

You said energy prices were coming down. We are still waiting.

The Strait is open. Stabilize the oil supply. Get these prices moving in the right direction.

Jaya used Section 8 assistance to help purchase a home.

When Jaya finally walked into the house she had purchased, she hesitated to unpack her boxes.

It still didn’t feel real.

After years of living on a fixed income while battling cancer and other health challenges, homeownership once felt completely out of reach. Housing assistance had helped keep a roof over her head, but she still dreamed of having a place she could truly call her own.

Through Ohio’s Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership Program, the assistance that previously helped cover part of her rent could instead be applied toward eligible mortgage expenses.

Her dream became reality.

Jaya nearly cried as she walked through the door and realized:

“This is my house.”

Many people know Section 8 as a rental assistance program, but fewer realize that some participating housing authorities offer qualified families a pathway from renting to homeownership.

Housing, groceries, insurance, utilities, transportation and nearly every other major expense have climbed significantly since the 1990s.

A six-figure income used to represent financial comfort for many families. Today, even households earning $100,000 can feel stretched—especially in areas with high housing costs.

The number may be debatable, but the message is clear: earning more does not automatically mean living better when the cost of everything rises with it.
