Did you know the first Swedes arrived in the US as early as 1638? 🇸🇪🇺🇸 It all began with Kalmar Nyckel, the ship that famously carried the first Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to what became the colony of New Sweden, the first European settlement in the Delaware River Valley. Sweden’s presence in North America predates American independence by nearly 140 years, and the ship remains a powerful symbol of this early chapter in shared transatlantic history.

🌿 These early settlers brought traditions and cultural influences that shaped the region for generations.

⛵ Now you have a rare chance to experience this history up close — a full-scale replica of Kalmar Nyckel is coming to Washington, DC for the first time in 14 years!

📍 if in DC, see it docked at The Wharf between June 7–9 where the Embassy will host a range of invitation-only activities aboard, but the ship will be visible from various points along the Potomac on arrival.

👀 Don’t miss the chance to see this iconic ship when in DC. Today’s Kalmar Nyckel serves as a floating classroom for recreational and educational experiences on the Eastern Seaboard.

As we mark on 20 May and the on 22 May, we’re celebrating the embassies and ambassador’s residences that have championed sustainability by revisiting one of our most popular features. From the Embassy of Canada to the U.S.'s National Wildlife Federation - certified monarch butterfly habitat, to the beehives built with reclaimed wood by staffers at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C. to the Embassy of Switzerland in the United States of America tiny ambassadors, Washington’s diplomatic properties are full of examples of how environmental stewardship can be expressed in visible, practical and meaningful ways – both locally, and in national policies governing diplomatic spaces.

Washington is increasingly recognized for how it approaches sustainability and the built environment. Diplomatic spaces are woven into that landscape. The choices made across embassy gardens, residences and grounds are visible reminders that these properties are places where ideas can be demonstrated, shared and replicated around the world, or right next door.

As world leaders jockey for position on climate change on the global stage, some embassies in Washington are taking a more local approach.

As Diplomatica continues to grow, we’re taking a moment to recognize the people who helped us along the way.

We’re putting together a Funding & Transparency page on the site to acknowledge the friends, family, and early supporters who have helped us over the years. Being transparent about how we’re funded is an important part of building trust with our readers, and we want to make sure the people who believed in the project early are recognized.

If you’ve supported Diplomatica in the past, thank you — it truly made a difference.

We changed giving platforms a few years ago, so if you donated at some point and we haven’t reached out about acknowledging you yet, please feel free to send Molly McCluskey a quick message so we can include you.
