Did you know the first Swedes arrived in the US as early as 1638? 🇸🇪🇺🇸 It all began with Kalmar Nyckel, the ship that famously carried the first Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to what became the colony of New Sweden, the first European settlement in the Delaware River Valley. Sweden’s presence in North America predates American independence by nearly 140 years, and the ship remains a powerful symbol of this early chapter in shared transatlantic history.
🌿 These early settlers brought traditions and cultural influences that shaped the region for generations.
⛵ Now you have a rare chance to experience this history up close — a full-scale replica of Kalmar Nyckel is coming to Washington, DC for the first time in 14 years!
📍 if in DC, see it docked at The Wharf between June 7–9 where the Embassy will host a range of invitation-only activities aboard, but the ship will be visible from various points along the Potomac on arrival.
👀 Don’t miss the chance to see this iconic ship when in DC. Today’s Kalmar Nyckel serves as a floating classroom for recreational and educational experiences on the Eastern Seaboard.
