Somalia has officially taken the United Nations Security Council Presidency, marking a significant milestone in its growing global prominence.
The rotational presidency role, which took effect on 1 January 2026, comes following Somalia's election into the 15-member UN Security Council as a non-permanent member last year.
"We reiterate our commitment to facilitating constructive and inclusive dialogue towards advancing global peace and security," the Somali Mission to the UN says as its envoy to the UN, Abukar Osman, assumes the leadership for the month of January.
African countries continue to push for permanent seats with veto power, criticising the current arrangement as ''unfair'' to the continent.
