Most of the job isn’t writing code. It’s reading it.

Someone else’s logic, your own code from six months ago, a library’s docs you didn’t want to open. Writing is 20% of the day - understanding is the rest.

That day again when your brain says “not today.” Zero energy. Zero motivation. But it still needs to get done.

And that’s normal. Motivation isn’t fuel you run on for years - it shows up once you’ve already started, not before. Wait for the “feeling” to show up first, and you’ll wait forever.

So the trick isn’t finding motivation. It’s not waiting for it.

You sit down. Set a 10-minute timer. Don’t think “I’ll finish the whole project” - think “I’ll open the file and write the first line.” That’s it.

And here’s the magic part: once you’re in motion, it’s easier to keep going than to stop. Discipline pulls motivation along with it, not the other way around.

So when you’re running on empty and there’s nothing left in the tank — just pull yourself together and get to work. The first 10 minutes are the hardest. After that, it carries itself.
