Happy ! Our final artist is Tyler Mitchell.

Tyler Mitchell (1995- ) is a photographer. Starting in ninth grade, Tyler created skating videos and from there got into photography. He is best known for his cover photo of Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue, becoming the first Black-American to shoot for the magazine, and one of the youngest ones at 23 years old.

He also has a book called El Paquete, highlighting skateboarding and architecture in Havana, Cuba. One of the portraits of Beyoncé by him are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

Happy ! Today's artist is Edmonia Lewis

Mary Edmonia Lewis, "Wildfire" (1844 - 1907), was a sculptor of mixed African-American and Native American (Ojibwe) heritage. She was the first African-American sculptor to achieve national and then international prominence, with the majority of her career being spent in Rome, Italy.

Her work is known for incorporating themes relating to Black people and indigenous peoples into Neoclassical-style sculpture, with some of them depicting some of the most famous abolitionists of her day

Happy . Today's artist is Robert S. Duncanson

Robert S. Duncanson (1821 – 1872) was a 19th-century landscapist Duncanson created renowned landscape paintings and is considered a second generation Hudson River School artist. Not only was he an artist, but he was also a free Black man.

He engaged in the abolitionist communities in America and England for promotion for his work. He’s considered to be the first African-American artist to be internationally known. While his approach to his work is unknown, there is discourse as to whether or not he did his work through a racialized perspective or not.

Happy ! Today's artist is Kara Walker.

Kara Walker (1969-) is a contemporary painter, silhouettist, print-maker, installation artist, and film-maker. She uses these mediums to explore the topics of race, gender, sexuality and more.

She is best known for her room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes. She’s taught at Columbia University and recently finished serving a five-year term as Tepper Chair in Visual Arts at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

Happy ! Today's visual artist is Kehinde Wiley.

Kehinde Wiley (1977-) is a portrait painter who is known for his naturalistic paintings of African Americans that reference the work of Old Master paintings. He started art at a very young age, even going to an art conservatory in Russia when he was 11.

Most recently, he was commissioned in 2017 to paint a portrait of former President Barack Obama for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and his painting has been visited many times ever since.

Happy ! Today's artist is Simone Leigh

Simone Leigh (1967- ) is a multimedia artist, working in sculpture, performance, video, and installations. She considers her work to be auto-ethnographic and her work centers on social issues such as feminism and Black womanhood.

She uses her pieces to center the experiences of Black femininity in different times of history and other social issues. Leigh was selected to represent the United States at the 2022 Venice Biennale, an arts organization in Venice, as the first Black woman to do so.

Happy ! We're highlighting visual art this week, and to kick us off is Basquiat.

Jean - Michel Basquiat, known mononymously as Basquiat, was a painter. His main style was neo-expressionism, a style that emerged in the late 70s. By the early 80s, Basquiat’s work was featured in numerous galleries and exhibitions worldwide.

At 21, he was the youngest artist to ever take part in documenta, a contemporary art exhibition in Kassel. He’s also had his art shown in the Whitney Museum in New York. Basquiat’s art was a form of political expression, utilizing his works to address issues such as poverty, integration versus segregation, and more.

Our final actress today is none other than Angela Bassett!

Angela Bassett (1958 - ) is an actress, director, and producer. She is well known for her biopics, starring as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It and Betty Shabazz in Malcolm and Panther.

She’s also performed in television from AHS to 9-1-1, and has been nominated and won many awards from the Academy’s to the Image Awards. Her talent and performances are such an integral role in Black Hollywood.

Our next actor is The Fresh Prince, Will Smith!

Will Smith (1968 - ) is an actor, rapper, and film producer. He’s been nominated for several acting awards and has even won four Grammys. He’s best known for his portrayal of himself in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, one of the earlier 90s sitcoms with a majority Black cast.

He also holds numerous records including being the the only actor to have starred in eleven consecutive films which grossed over $150 million internationally. His versatility has kept him on our screens for decades.

Happy ! We got 3 for 1 today so be sure to keep an eye out. For the first, we're highlighting Eddie Murphy!

Eddie Murphy (1961 - ) is an actor and comedian. He rose to fame on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, for which he was a regular cast member from 1980 to 1984.

Besides his comedy career, his acting career is very fruitful. One of his most famous and well-known movies is “Coming to America” as Prince Akeem Joffer of Zamunda. He was also in Dr. Dolittle, Mulan, Shrek, and more. Definitely a living legend among us.
