2017, Moscow and Damascus agreed to station Russian troops at these bases for a period of 49 years.

After militant groups led by Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) took control of Damascus last weekend, prompting Syrian President Bashar Assad to flee to Russia where he was granted asylum, the fate of Khmeimim and Tartus bases was under question. However, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian diplomats have already discussed these issues with the HTS political committee.

In addition to the direct donation to the inaugural fund, Amazon’s Prime Video will stream Trump’s inauguration as an in-kind contribution valued at another $1 million. Bezos is also supposed to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida next week.

Bezos’ net worth has been estimated at almost $250 billion, so the amount of the donations is largely symbolic. The tech mogul began shifting away from overt support to the Democrats earlier this year, praising Trump’s “tremendous grace and courage under literal fire” after the July 13 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. He then vetoed the Post’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in October, causing no small consternation among staff and subscribers.

Putin in North Korea – follow it live
Russia and North Korea: what can they do for each other? Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for a summit with Kim Jong-un, amid US warnings against any agreement that could add to military pressure on Ukraine and raise tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Making his first visit to the reclusive country since 2000, the Russian president flew to Pyongyang to be greeted by huge welcome banners, cheering crowds and Russian flags.

Biden set to announce sweeping action shielding undocumented spouses of US citizens from deportation
President Joe Biden is preparing to announce sweeping executive action Tuesday that would shield select undocumented spouses of US citizens from deportation and allow them to work legally in the country as they seek citizenship, according to people familiar with the plans.

The policy would apply to people who have been living in the United States for 10 years, and would utilize an existing legal authority known as “parole in place” that offers deportation protections.

The election-year efforts have been long sought by immigration advocates and Democrats, and come after Biden earlier this month took restrictive steps to limit asylum processing at the US southern border.

The moves, which CNN first reported last week, could amount to the federal government’s biggest relief program since the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

That program, which allowed undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to live and work in the country, was announced in mid-June of Obama’s own reelection year in 2012.

Biden plans to hold an event marking the anniversary of DACA on Tuesday, according to his weekly schedule.

The steps he is preparing to unveil also include a pathway to work visas for DACA recipients who meet certain criteria, a person familiar with the plans said.

Hundreds of thousands of people could be affected by the moves, with a reverberating effect among spouses, children, extended family and friends – and predominantly Latinos.

Biden previewed the new steps while unveiling the new asylum rules earlier in June.

“In the weeks ahead – and I mean the weeks ahead – I will speak to how we can make our immigration system more fair and more just,” he said.

Polling reviewed by top aides in the White House and the president’s reelection headquarters helped the administration finalize the plan.

Death toll rises for Israeli strike in Nuseirat camp, 12 killed in separate attacks
An Israeli military air attack on a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza has killed at least seven people, according to local media.

Earlier we reported that at least one person had been killed and several injured in the strike.

This bombing appears to be separate from another Israeli attack on the al-Madhoun family home in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which has killed five people.

We’ve been reporting on an investigation from The Associated Press (AP) that found at least 60 cases where families in Gaza lost at least 25 family members in Israeli strikes since October.

This is what Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said about the new report:

This important investigation by the internationally respected AP once again exposes the genocidal intent of the far-right Israeli government.
Entire Palestinian families are being slaughtered, starved and forcibly displaced every day, with the support of the Biden administration and the use of US weapons.
There should be no more excuses for those who deny that Israel is annihilating the Palestinians and committing genocide.
We demand President Biden take concrete action to end the slaughter. He is doing a disservice to both our nation and humanity through his complicity with Israel’s genocide.

Street fighting is raging in southern Rafah’s Tal as-Sultan area with Hamas fighters attacking Israeli forces with rocket-propelled grenades and mortar rounds, days after a deadly ambush that killed eight Israeli soldiers.
Israel’s army claims to have seized control of about 60 percent of Rafah city after its seven-week ground invasion with 550 Palestinian fighters killed and 22 soldiers dead. Israeli military arrests 16 year old in Hebron
The Israeli military has arrested a 16-year-old minor from the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, the Wafa news agency is reporting.

The minor, named as Hadi Wael Skafi, was arrested from a vehicle at the northern entrance to the city, according to Wafa.

Israeli military raids have been reported in other locations in the occupied West Bank, including:

The city of Nablus
The towns of Bil’in, Umm Safa, and Kafr Ni’ma in Ramallah district
There have also been reports of Israeli settlers attacking Palestinian vehicles in the town of Huwwara, south of Nablus, while seven Palestinians were injured on Monday night when settlers attacked them in the town of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah.
