Sunflower oil is produced from sunflower seeds through a carefully controlled industrial process. The production begins when mature sunflowers are harvested from agricultural fields. The seeds are separated from the flower heads and transported to a processing plant. At the factory, the seeds are thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, dirt, stones, and other foreign materials. They are then dried to achieve the proper moisture level for processing.
After cleaning, the outer shells of the seeds may be removed, depending on the desired quality of the final product. The seeds are then crushed and ground into a coarse meal. This material is heated to help release the oil more efficiently. The heated seed meal is passed through mechanical presses that squeeze out a large portion of the oil. In many modern factories, a food-grade solvent is also used to extract any remaining oil from the seed material, ensuring maximum efficiency.
The extracted crude oil contains impurities, pigments, waxes, and other substances that must be removed. Therefore, the oil undergoes a refining process that includes several stages such as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization. These steps improve the oil’s appearance, taste, smell, and shelf life while ensuring it meets food safety standards.
Once refining is complete, the sunflower oil is filtered to achieve a clear and uniform appearance. Quality control tests are performed to verify that the oil meets required standards. Finally, the finished oil is packaged into bottles, cans, or large containers, labeled, and distributed to supermarkets and other retail outlets. The result is a versatile cooking oil that is widely used in households and the food industry around the world.
