With deep respect and admiration, we remember Frank A. Aukofer — award-winning journalist, civil rights correspondent, Washington bureau chief, Founding President of the National Press Foundation, and one of the founders of the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards.

Frank passed away peacefully on July 14 at the age of 90, surrounded by loved ones. He dedicated more than 40 years to journalism, covering some of the most pivotal moments in American history — from the Selma marches and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to multiple wars, impeachment trials, and national political conventions.

His commitment to truth, mentorship, and the power of storytelling shaped generations of journalists. Whether reporting from Washington or reviewing cars in his long-running column “DriveWays,” Frank never lost sight of the importance of connecting with people.

He also played a crucial role in advancing journalism education and professional standards through decades of leadership at the National Press Foundation and NACTOY.

His legacy lives on in the thousands of journalists he mentored, the organizations he helped build, and the stories he told with heart and purpose.

In lieu of flowers, the Aukofer family invites donations in his name to the Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship at the National Press Foundation.

Thank you, Frank, for your brilliance, your service, and your unshakable belief in journalism that matters.

Having Lincoln share their vehicles with area consumers at Tysons Corner Center was great. Though the Häagen-Dazs was worth the visit.
