🏈🏀⚾ Today in American Sports History — June 1st

📅 Event: Lou Gehrig Begins His Legendary Streak (1925)

On June 1, 1925, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees began his record-breaking streak of 2,130 consecutive games played when he pinch-hit for Paul Wanninger. This streak stood unbroken for 56 years until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995.

⚾ Why It Matters:

• Iron Man Legacy: Gehrig’s endurance earned him the nickname “The Iron Horse,” symbolizing resilience and commitment in American sports.

• Cultural Impact: His streak became a powerful story of discipline and perseverance, later intensified by his diagnosis of ALS (now called Lou Gehrig’s disease).

• Baseball Milestone: It became one of the most respected records in sports history, deeply tied to the heart of Major League Baseball tradition.

🇺🇸 Today in American History: May 31

Event: The Tulsa Race Massacre Begins
Date: May 31–June 1, 1921
Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma

🔥 What Happened?

On May 31, 1921, one of the most violent racial attacks in American history erupted in the thriving Black community of Greenwood, also known as “Black Wall Street.” A white mob, incited by false rumors of an assault, looted, burned, and destroyed more than 35 blocks of Black-owned businesses, homes, churches, and hospitals.

• Over 1,200 homes were destroyed
• As many as 300 Black residents were killed
• 10,000 were left homeless

⚖️ Why It Matters Today
• This event exposes the extent of racial violence and economic sabotage faced by Black Americans after slavery.
• For decades, the massacre was covered up—not taught in schools or acknowledged by local officials.
• It is now recognized as a pivotal example of racial injustice, generational wealth loss, and the need for reparations and historical truth.

🕊️ Legacy & Reflection

Today, efforts to rebuild and remember Greenwood are ongoing. The tragedy also fuels national conversations on racial equity, justice reform, and historical reconciliation.

📅 Today in Black History – May 30

Event: Countee Cullen receives his Master’s Degree from Harvard University (May 30, 1926)
Why It Matters:
Countee Cullen, a leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance, earned his master’s degree in English and French from Harvard on this day. A poet, educator, and activist, Cullen used literature to elevate Black intellect, challenge racial barriers, and inspire generations of writers.

His work spotlighted the duality of being Black and American, expressing both pride and pain through powerful verse. His achievements in academia defied segregation-era norms and proved that Black excellence could not be silenced.

🖤 HM SOKO Reflection:

Countee Cullen’s legacy reminds us: Black history is not just struggle — it’s brilliance. Education is resistance. Creativity is revolution. His life affirms the HM SOKO spirit: we rise through knowledge, we fight through words, and we shine in every space they said we didn’t belong.
