In Douglas County, Georgia, Jose "Joe" Torres, 26, and Kayla Rae Norton, 25, received prison sentences following their convictions for a racially motivated assault on an 8-year-old Black child's birthday celebration.

According to prosecutors, the couple was part of a group known as "Respect the Flag" that drove by the outdoor gathering displaying Confederate flags, shouting racial slurs, and making armed threats before law enforcement arrived. Torres was found guilty of multiple counts, including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and violating Georgia's Street Gang Terrorism Act, while Norton was convicted of terroristic threats and the street gang offense.

The judge noted that their actions were "motivated by racial hatred." Superior Court Judge William McClain sentenced Torres to 20 years in prison, with 13 years to be served, and Norton to 15 years, with six years to be served; both individuals will be prohibited from returning to Douglas County after their release.
