A proposed GTA VI marketing campaign has created a political fight in Miami-Dade County.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s administration has discussed promotional ideas with Rockstar Games ahead of the game’s November release. Reported concepts include temporarily branding parts of Miami International Airport as “Vice City Airport,” wrapping Metromover trains and installing GTA-themed manhole covers. The mayor’s office says the partnership could generate revenue for the county.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz strongly opposes the proposal. She argues that Grand Theft Auto centers on murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking and violence against law enforcement, the same crimes her department works to prevent.
County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez also opposes using public property to promote what he described as a fictional version of Miami defined by crime and violence. A chief judge reportedly requested that county courts be excluded from any campaign.
No final agreement has been announced, and any proposal requiring commission approval could face a public vote.
Should Miami-Dade use the popularity of GTA VI to generate revenue, or should county property stay out of the promotion?
