I had just earned my dream job as a full-fledged surgeon, wearing the title with pride. During a late shift, an ambulance brought in a homeless woman needing urgent surgery. No insurance, no papers—without my help, she wouldn't survive.
I knew the risks—hospital policy forbade high-cost procedures for uninsured patients. But I took an oath to save lives, so I did what I had to and performed the surgery, bracing for the fallout.
The next morning, the chief doctor publicly humiliated me in front of everyone during rounds. "You spent thousands on a surgery for someone who can't pay!" he shouted. Then, he fired me on the spot. I stood there, heart pounding, angry and ashamed, wondering how saving a life could cost me everything.
