Here's the cool part: gravity does all the work. You'd fall faster and faster as you got closer to the center.

Right in the middle, you'd be moving at an insane speed — about 28,000 km/h.

Then that same speed would carry you back up, slowing down little by little, until you popped out on the other side of the planet. 🌍
And here's the part that's hard to believe: it doesn't matter where the tunnel goes.

A short tunnel between two nearby cities and a long tunnel to the far side of the world would both take the same 42 minutes.

Shorter tunnels mean you never get going as fast.

Of course, this could never actually happen.

The middle of the Earth is thousands of degrees hot, so no tunnel (or person) could survive it.
Still, it's one of the simplest ways to see how powerful and strange gravity really is.

JWST may have found something the Universe has never shown us before — a “black hole star.” 🕳️⭐

The James Webb Space Telescope has spotted an extraordinary object from the very early Universe that may help solve one of astronomy’s biggest mysteries: how did supermassive black holes become so enormous so quickly after the Big Bang?

The object, called MoM-BH-1*, existed less than 660 million years after the birth of the Universe. At first glance, it looks like a tiny, faint red source — one of the mysterious “little red dots” that JWST has been discovering across the early Universe.

But there’s something very strange about it.

Scientists think MoM-BH*-1 could be a rapidly feeding black hole buried inside an incredibly dense cocoon of gas. The gas absorbs the enormous energy produced by material falling into the black hole and then re-emits that energy, making the whole object appear surprisingly star-like.

In other words, it may not be a star at all.

It could be a black hole surrounded by so much glowing gas that, from billions of light-years away, it looks like a star.

And this may be the missing link astronomers have been searching for.

These “black hole stars” could represent an early stage in the growth of the supermassive black holes that eventually ended up at the centers of galaxies like our own Milky Way. The discovery could therefore help explain how black holes with millions or even billions of solar masses managed to grow so rapidly in the Universe’s infancy.

JWST has already challenged many of our ideas about the early Universe. Now, it may be showing us the strange baby stages of the monsters that eventually dominated the hearts of galaxies.

And the most exciting part?

MoM-BH-1 may not be alone.* Scientists suspect that some of the other mysterious little red dots seen by Webb could be hiding similar black holes beneath their glowing cocoons.

What does “far away” actually mean in space?

On Earth, a hundred kilometres feels far. A thousand kilometres is a serious journey. In the universe? That barely gets us started. Let’s step outside our Solar System and see just how quickly “far” turns into something almost impossible to imagine:

☀️ Large Magellanic Cloud ~163,000 light-years. The light reaching us today began its journey before humans ever existed.

✨ Andromeda Galaxy ~2.5 million light-years. When we see Andromeda, we’re seeing it as it looked about 2.5 million years ago.

👁️ Black Eye Galaxy (M64) ~17 million light-years. Its light set off when early apes were beginning to appear on Earth.

🌌 Messier 77 ~45 million light-years. The light we see today started travelling when dinosaurs still dominated our planet.

🔭 Malin 1 ~1.2 billion light-years. That light has been travelling through space for roughly 1.2 billion years.

And this is the part that makes cosmic distances truly strange:
The farther away we look, the further back in time we see.

A telescope isn't just showing us distant places. It’s showing us ancient versions of the universe. So when you look at a galaxy millions or billions of light-years away, you're not seeing it as it is now. You're seeing what it looked like when its light began its journey to us. The universe doesn't just have an enormous amount of space. It has an enormous amount of history hiding inside that space. 🌌

52 seconds into launch. ⚡⚡

Apollo 12 hadn't even left Earth's atmosphere when lightning struck the spacecraft. Then it struck again.

The cockpit exploded with warning lights. The guidance system lost its bearings. And back in Houston, Mission Control's data turned into complete nonsense.

Everyone in the room thought the mission was over.

But at his console sat a young controller named John Aaron. He had seen this exact pattern once before — during an unrelated test a year earlier. Instead of ignoring it, he'd dug in and figured out exactly what caused it.

So when Apollo 12's screens scrambled, he already knew the fix.

Four words:
👉 "Try SCE to Aux."

The flight director didn't know what it meant.
The CAPCOM didn't know what it meant.
Commander Pete Conrad didn't know what it meant.

But lunar module pilot Alan Bean found the tiny switch — and flipped it.

The data snapped back. The spacecraft was fine.

Five days later, Conrad and Bean walked on the Moon. 🌕

The mission wasn't saved by luck. It was saved by one person who got curious about a minor anomaly a year before it mattered.

John Aaron earned the nickname "steely-eyed missile man" that day — one of the highest honors in spaceflight.

🌑☀️ TODAY, the Moon is about to do something the Sun can't do on its own: reveal its secret crown to the whole world.

In just hours, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the globe — and NASA isn't just watching from the ground. They're chasing it.

A WB-57 high-altitude research jet will race through the sky, hunting the Moon's shadow so its onboard cameras can capture the Sun's corona — that ghostly, wispy outer atmosphere you can ONLY see when the Moon perfectly blocks the Sun's blinding face. At the very same time, teams of students from the US, Iceland, and Spain will be releasing high-altitude balloons into the darkened sky, measuring how our atmosphere itself reacts when day turns to night in a matter of minutes.

Think about that for a second. 🎈

Birds go quiet. Temperatures drop. The sky turns a strange twilight blue-grey. And somewhere above it all, a jet is racing the shadow of the Moon across the Earth just to steal a few more precious seconds of data.

As NASA's Kelly Korreck put it: from Earth, during totality, scientists can study the Sun's corona in a way that's impossible anywhere else in the entire solar system. Nowhere else in the cosmos gives us this view. Not Mars. Not the Moon. Only here, only during these fleeting minutes.

Every eclipse is different, and every one teaches scientists something new about the invisible forces connecting the Sun, the Moon, and us. 🌍

Billions of years ago, our Solar System may have looked very different.

Some scientific simulations suggest that there were once five giant planets orbiting the Sun instead of the four we have today. So what happened to the fifth one?

The early Solar System was a chaotic place. The giant planets may have moved through a violent gravitational reshuffling, pulling and pushing each other into new orbits. And according to one of the leading scenarios, Jupiter may have given the extra ice giant a gravitational kick powerful enough to throw it completely out of the Solar System.

Not destroyed.

Not swallowed by the Sun.

Just… gone. 🌌

If this happened, that planet could still be out there today, drifting alone through interstellar space as a rogue planet.

NASA just shared new close-up photos of Curiosity's wheels, and they tell quite a story. The photos, taken this July, show fresh cracks and holes in the rover's metal wheels — marks left after 14 years of driving over sharp rocks, deep canyons, and old volcano ground on Mars.

But this isn't a bad sign. It actually shows how well the rover was built. NASA knew this wear would happen and has spent over 10 years picking safer paths to protect the wheels as much as possible. What they learned from this damage was so useful that engineers used it to build stronger wheels for the newer Perseverance rover.

Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012, and 14 years later, it's still moving, still climbing, and still sending back new discoveries. Every crack in those wheels is like a mile marker showing everything it's been through.
