WASHINGTON, June 1 – National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. today issued the following statement on the designation of the Pentagon press office as a “classified space,” banning reporters from accessing it:

“Designating the Pentagon press office as ‘classified space’ is a remarkable and troubling escalation in the Defense Department’s ongoing effort to restrict independent reporting.

The Department of Defense should immediately reverse this decision, restore meaningful access for credentialed journalists and reaffirm its commitment to transparency and the First Amendment. Congress and the courts should continue closely scrutinizing efforts that erode press freedom in the name of security.

This move does not occur in isolation. It follows a troubling pattern of escalating restrictions on Pentagon coverage, including efforts to limit journalists to pre-approved information, revoke credentials for routine reporting practices, and physically remove reporters from long-standing workspaces and access without an es**rt. Federal courts have already found key elements of these policies unconstitutional, with litigation ongoing.

Calling a press workspace ‘classified’ does not make the government more transparent. It creates yet another obstacle between journalists and the information Americans have a right to know, especially at a moment when the public needs clear, unfiltered information about the U.S. military.

Independent reporting on the U.S. military is not optional. When journalists are pushed farther from the institutions they cover, the American people are left with less information, less transparency, and less oversight. Any effort to restrict that access should alarm everyone who values a free and informed society.”

WASHINGTON, May 27 – National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. today issued the following statement on Russia’s designation of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) as an "undesirable" organization, which threatens any individual inside Russia who cooperates with, donates to, or distributes the content of CPJ with fines and up to six years in prison.

“We stand by our colleagues with the Committee to Protect Journalists and their vital work to document Russia’s rapid deterioration of press freedoms under President Vladimir Putin. The National Press Club calls on Russia to remove CPJ and other journalism advocacy organizations as ‘undesirable.’

Russia’s use of the ‘undesirable’ label to silence independent media, human rights organizations, and advocacy groups is not new and has only accelerated following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

CPJ joins a long list of organizations that have been effectively criminalized for daring to speak out against ever-restricting avenues for free expression in the country. These include but are not limited to Reporters Without Borders, the International Women’s Media Foundation, and exiled Russian media outlets.

Journalism is not a crime, and the work of CPJ to defend the rights of independent journalists is not illegal. As avenues to challenge official Kremlin propaganda close, CPJ’s commitment to continue to stand by Russian journalists attacked, imprisoned and forced into exile remains vital.”

WASHINGTON, May 26 — National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. today issued the following statement on a reported proposal by President Trump to require nondisclosure agreements for all federal employees:

“The notion of imposing sweeping nondisclosure agreements across the federal workforce represents a profound threat to transparency, press freedom, and the public’s right to know.

A functioning democracy depends on the free flow of information. At its core, this measure appears designed to deter federal employees from speaking with journalists by threatening their livelihoods — even about matters of public concern. Federal employees are often the first to identify waste, misconduct, or threats to public safety. When those individuals are effectively silenced from sharing information with reporters, the public loses a critical line of sight into its own government.

Efforts to impose sweeping secrecy obligations across the civil service do not strengthen the government. Instead, they shield it from scrutiny and weaken public trust by limiting the flow of information citizens rely on to make informed decisions.

Measures that chill speech, weaken transparency, and limit the public’s right to know must be rejected. Instead, reforms should strengthen whistleblower protections, uphold First Amendment principles, and reaffirm the essential role of a free press in holding power to account.

The government has a legitimate responsibility to safeguard classified information, but the First Amendment does not stop at the doors of public service. Policies that broadly restrict communication with the press raise serious constitutional concerns and weaken long-standing norms that protect both free expression and independent journalism. The First Amendment protects not only the right to publish, but the right to speak and share information of public concern.”

WASHINGTON, May 21, 2026 — Martha Raddatz, ABC News’ chief global affairs correspondent and “This Week” co-anchor, will accept the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award during a gala in her honor on Nov. 12 in Washington, D.C.

Over her decades-long career, Raddatz has covered national security, foreign policy, and politics from the State Department, the White House, and conflict zones around the world.

The Fourth Estate Award recognizes journalists who have made significant contributions to the field and is the National Press Club’s most esteemed prize. At a time when press freedom is under pressure around the world, the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award is not just a recognition of excellence, but a reminder of the essential role journalism plays in sustaining informed, democratic societies.

“The greatest privilege of my career is the trust people place in me when they share their stories – trust that doesn’t end when the cameras turn off as I stay with them long after the news cycle fades,” Raddatz said. “I am deeply honored to receive this award and humbled by what it represents, as it is a powerful reminder of all stories we have reported and the people we have touched.”
