08/14/2023

Today marks the 11th anniversary of the day Austin Tice was captured. This morning we held a panel discussion on challenges faced by US Government in resolving journalist hostage cases. When a journalist is taken hostage, it deprives citizens from the information they need to participate in a functioning democracy. And when a hostage is held for 11 years it makes the government look incredibly weak and disorganized and limits their ability to project power. In light of new hostage cases like that of Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal, we are compelled to look at the approach and results in these cases.

On Tuesday, September 5, Maria Ressa will address the threats facing press freedom worldwide and the opportunities for civil society to respond at a National Press Club Headliners luncheon.

Ressa, a former CNN bureau chief who co-founded the innovative Philippine news site Rappler, has been lauded by press organizations across the globe for her fearless journalism and efforts to sound the alarm about the use of digital technology to undermine democratic institutions. 07/26/2023

Former NPR reporter and veteran foreign correspondent Sean Carberry will offer his unique perspective on life in several war zones when he discusses his new book, “Passport Stamps: Searching the World for a War to Call Home," at a National Press Club Headliners book event on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 p.m.

From 2007 through 2014, Carberry traveled the world reporting from war zones and fragile states for public radio. He spent time in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Congo, Colombia, Kosovo, Sudan and other rough neighborhoods before settling down in Afghanistan in 2012. There, he served as NPR’s Kabul correspondent until the end of 2014 when NPR closed the bureau. He is currently the managing editor of National Defense Magazine.

“Passport Stamps” is a candid, darkly comic, and emotionally naked tale of a man who—driven by grief, loss, and the desire to find his “tribe”—seeks solace in the world’s most dangerous places and his pursuit to join the ranks of combat-tested war correspondents. The learning curve of reporting in hostile environments is steep, sometimes comical, and sometimes nearly fatal. When the assignment ends, Carberry is left to confront the mental and emotional impact of the years of danger, death, and destruction.

Former Sen. Gary Hart will join two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter James Risen on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Risen’s new book, “The Last Honest Man,” which explores the Church Committee, a special Senate panel convened in 1975 to investigate the federal government’s clandestine programs, including the CIA’s plot to assassinate Fidel Castro, and the FBI’s role in the killing of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton.

Other panelists include co-author Tom Risen and former Church Committee staff members Peter Fenn, Frederick Baron, Rick Inderfurth and Loch Johnson.

Congressional staffers who worked for the Church committee recently wrote an open letter urging Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who chairs the newly formed House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, to change course by pursuing a bipartisan inquiry. Hart, the last surviving member of the Church Committee, writing in The New York Times, called Jordan’s subcommittee a “mockery.”

Thurs. May 11 is the one-year anniversary of the killing of veteran American reporter Shireen Abu Akleh. A correspondent for Al Jazeera, Shireen had been covering events in the region for 15 years and was following all the protocols to maintain safety. She was in plain sight of the Israeli forces. She was wearing a vest clearly marked PRESS, and was wearing her helmet. But, despite these precautions, evidence indicates she was fired upon and killed by the Israeli military. Shireen is a U.S. citizen and as such her death should receive a full investigation. The Israeli government’s cooperation has been limited and insufficient and no one has been held accountable.

Join us on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. as Al Jazeera's Washington Bureau Chief Abderrahim Foukara discusses the outlet's concerns as Shireen’s employer. NPC President Eileen O’Reilly will remind us why the National Press Club honored Shireen in 2022 with the President’s Award. Shireen’s niece, Lina Abu Akleh will address the concerns of Shireen’s family as well as her own personal loss.

Professional Club, Live Event Venue & Media Production Facility

The National Press Club is a global membership organization for professionals who work in the journalism, media and communications industries, as well as a world-class meeting/conference center and multimedia production facility in downtown Washington, DC that hosts thousands of events each year for clients from around the world.

Where News Happens The National Press Club is known as “The Place Where News Happens." Global leaders in government, politics, business, music, film and sport visit the club every day. Each year, the Club hosts more than 250,000 visitors at more than 2,000 events that are beamed to global audiences in print, on the air and online.

Our Business The National Press Club is one of the nation’s leading conference centers and event facilities. It provides state-of-the-art service for clients who require the best in meeting environments. Our professional staff is expert at coordinating banquets and receptions, as well as news conferences, meetings, symposiums, webcasts and satellite media tours. From our AV team to our broadcast team to our online staff to our still photographers, we are ready to help you present your message to the audience in the room, across the country and around the world. We practice and refine our technology and techniques every day for events large and small, and provide high-tech messaging solutions in an effective and professional manner. Our conference rooms combine beauty and function. Our banquet food and services enjoy a wonderful reputation. And our location – in the heart of Washington, DC - is both convenient and attractive. Our Mission The revenues generated from our event business and from member’s dues and fees are used to support the Club’s ongoing efforts to enhance the profession of journalism. This is done primarily through the efforts of our 501 C-3, The Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library at the National Press Club. The Library provides classes, training, panel discussions and other professional development activities to active journalists in transition, as well as to young journalists and journalism students. You can support our activities by becoming a member of the Club; by hosting your next event, reception or news conference at our facilities; or by supporting the Library through a grant or donation. Your participation in these activities will help us continue to be The World’s Leading Professional Organization For Journalists. We encourage you to join us today – either online or by visiting the Club for a tour. Call us to make arrangements. You will be doing your part to support professional journalism – the cornerstone of a free society.
