WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 – The National Press Club is deeply concerned about the removal of journalist Mario Guevara and the chilling signal it sends to those who report in the United States. When reporters fear that telling the truth could lead to deportation, press freedom is under threat.

Freedom of the press, protected by the First Amendment, applies to everyone who gathers and publishes news — no matter their citizenship. This case shows how immigration status can be weaponized against reporters, deterring the watchdog journalism the public depends on. That is dangerous for journalists and for the nation’s right to know.

We are also deeply concerned for Mr. Guevara’s safety now that he has been returned to El Salvador, where he has previously been targeted. U.S. officials must ensure that immigration enforcement is not used — even inadvertently — to intimidate or silence the press.

For more than a century, the National Press Club has championed press freedom at home and abroad. We urge leaders across government to protect that principle and ensure journalists can report without fear.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 — Today, National Press Club President Mike Balsamo released the following statement on the Pentagon’s new pledge requirement for reporters:

“The Pentagon is now demanding that journalists sign a pledge not to obtain or report any information — even if unclassified — unless it has been expressly authorized by the government. This is a direct assault on independent journalism at the very place where independent scrutiny matters most: the U.S. military.

For generations, Pentagon reporters have provided the public with vital information about how wars are fought, how defense dollars are spent, and how decisions are made that put American lives at risk. That work has only been possible because reporters could seek out facts without needing government permission.

If the news about our military must first be approved by the government, then the public is no longer getting independent reporting. It is getting only what officials want them to see. That should alarm every American.

Independent reporting on the military is essential to democracy. It is what allows citizens to hold leaders accountable and ensures that decisions of war and peace are made in the light of day. This pledge undermines that principle, and the National Press Club calls on the Pentagon to rescind it immediately.

This crackdown also comes at a time when the nation is witnessing a devastating hollowing out of defense trade publications, just as rigorous, independent coverage of military and national security issues has never been more essential.”

WASHINGTON, September 17 -- Today, the National Press Club urged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to withdraw a proposed rule that would sharply restrict the ability of foreign correspondents to live and work in the United States. The proposal would replace the long-standing "duration of status" system with fixed admission periods of 240 days, and just 90 days for Chinese nationals.

"For 117 years, the National Press Club has welcomed foreign correspondents to Washington," said Mike Balsamo, 118th President of the Club. "Foreign journalists are not guests in our democracy — they are witnesses to it. Their reporting has told the story of America through world wars, civil rights struggles, and the end of the Cold War. This rule would make that work harder, not easier."

The Club warned that the rule risks triggering retaliation against American reporters overseas. "When we treat journalists differently based on nationality, we invite other countries to do the same," Balsamo said. "In 2020, U.S. reporters were expelled from China amid visa disputes. We cannot afford to put our own journalists at risk by setting that precedent here."

The Club stressed that the proposal also threatens America’s reputation as a safe harbor for reporters fleeing persecution. "Uncertainty and bureaucracy are the enemies of strong reporting," Balsamo said. "A free press doesn’t stop at America’s borders. It depends on correspondents who can work here without fear their time will run out."

The National Press Club called on DHS to maintain the current system and reaffirm the United States’ role as a global leader in press freedom.

Editors Note: The National Press Club and the Press Freedom Center plan to submit a public comment to this proposed rule change from DHS, following the substance of this statement.

Robert Redford, as one of the great box office heartthrobs, caused a huge stir when he appeared at the National Press Club on September 13, 1994. The passing of this legendary actor and film director this week at the age of 89 brings to mind that day, with a packed ballroom and Club members demanding entry to the pre-luncheon reception.
