This bill is about to hit working families where it hurts most.

Just because the world can be harsh doesn’t mean we should be harsh to each other.

When you’re lost in the dark, you don’t need someone to tell you to see better. You need a light. You need guidance before you can find your way.

Back in 1973, the Supreme Court guaranteed abortion rights through Roe v. Wade. Exactly two years ago today, they struck it down. Following Dobbs v. Jackson, 19 states immediately enacted bans or severe limits on reproductive care, disproportionately harming Black women and families with limited resources. Yet citizens responded: 13 states used ballot initiatives to safeguard access. Our voices. Our rights. Our votes. They still matter.

Black women face impossible barriers in healthcare every single day. We’re dismissed, ignored, and our pain minimized. Adriana Smith’s story shows how these failures can become deadly when mixed with cruel laws.

Georgia forced her family to watch her body on life support for months after she was declared brain dead. This wasn’t about saving life - it was about control. Her loved ones couldn’t even grieve in peace.

When laws prioritize potential life over actual women, this is what happens. Families are traumatized. Science gets thrown out. Grief becomes a political battleground instead of something private and sacred.

We already know the healthcare system fails us. Now add laws that strip away our right to make decisions about our own bodies and our families’ futures. This affects all of us - not just those seeking abortion care.

Our voices matter. Our choices matter. Our families deserve better than having their most painful moments turned into political theater. We need leaders who trust us to make our own decisions.

Taking it to the streets sends a message, but real power comes from the work that happens between the marches.

We need to be in every room where decisions get made. That means running for school board, city council, and state positions. It means building coalitions across different communities and investing in the next generation of leaders who look like us and understand our struggles.

We can’t ignore reality: Only 25% of Black Americans seek mental health treatment vs 40% of white Americans. Nearly 10% lack insurance vs 5.2% of whites.

Now it could get worse. Republicans are pushing $715+ billion in Medicaid/ACA cuts, leaving 8.6+ million uninsured ultimately hitting communities already facing barriers hardest.

Mental health IS healthcare. Healthcare IS a human right.

As Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, we’re spotlighting something largely ignored: Black mental health and the fight for our access to care.

The stats are real - we’re dealing with higher PTSD rates (8.7% vs 7.4%), and nearly 65% of our youth face trauma compared to 30% of other groups. From historical laws designed to harm us through 1965 to today’s subtle but dangerous racism, we’re still fighting barriers to housing, healthcare, and education while facing disproportionate incarceration.

Now Republicans are pushing to strip away mental health coverage - threatening the very access we’ve been fighting for. We can’t let that happen.

Our healing matters. Our access matters. Our voices matter.

Black families brought flowers, sang hymns, and created a moving tribute that reminds us of the holiday’s profound roots in remembrance and sacrifice.
