Presidential Adviser on Gender Affairs Engages Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs on Implementation of GEWE

*_Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Waterloo Street, Freetown, Thursday, October 26, 2023 -_* Presidential Adviser on Gender Affairs, Mrs. Isata Jabbie Kabbah, has engaged officials of the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and urged the popularization and implementation of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, GEWE, Law.

“I am here to familiarise myself with your work and also to let you know that I am ready to give you technical support to achieve His Excellency, President Dr Julius Maada Bio’s agenda on gender and gender related issues,” she said.

She advised that they should do more to popularise the GEWE law because there were a lot in the Act that the ordinary Sierra Leonean must know about, adding that what most people knew was the 30% representation of women in elective and appointive positions.

She also encouraged the officials to critically look at issues that had to do with women, children and climate change, noting that those categories of people were the most vulnerable to climate change.

Mrs. Kabbah, who is the wife of the former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, was recently appointed by President Bio to advise him on gender issues.

Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr Isata Mahoi, said they appreciated the Presidential Adviser on Gender, adding that her ministry was ready to work with her office to achieve the President’s goal on gender and children’s affairs.

“I believe that working together with you will help us greatly in terms of the importance needed to protect and promote the issues of women and children. We are working with partners to implement the GEWE Act. We are also serving as machinery to monitor its implementation across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies,” she assured.

Dr. Mahoi said they had specifically partnered with the UNFPA, UN Women, UNDP, UNICEF, Plan International, Civil Society Organisations and other women and child-centered organisations, adding that they were also working closely with the Office of the First Lady, who was championing the promotion and protection of women and children in the country.

*Labour and industrial relations have become one of the priority areas of the President. Added to education, the President believes the welfare of the workforce is one of the engines that propels an economy forward.President Bio has had a critical look at this sector and intertwined it with his overall policy of human capital development. In recognition of his belief, he first perfected the functions within the ministry by appointing Mohamed Rahman Swaray who has been designing and rolling out policies to accomplish the President's goals in the Ministry of labour. Minister Rahman Swaray has gone back to the drawing board and brought up a completely reconstructed policy that is slowly but surely turning things around in Sierra Leone's work force. His sound policies have been accompanied with visits to different industrial zones ,labour unions and and employer establishments. This picture depicts one such visit he just made. Congratulations Mr Minister sir. Keep it up. @ analytical writing*

President of Drivers Union Hails President Bio’s Governance Style

President of Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union, Alpha Amadu Bah has informed the press about the role of the union which is to promote, defend and protect the membership and to negotiate with the government. He also praised President Bio for his governance style, which he said, has assisted his membership in diverse ways.

Amadu Bah made specific reference to how government has been dealing with fuel prices, saying that this is the only government that ensures fuel prices are adjusted downwards when the global price drops on the world market, even after they have been re-adjusted upwards in situations where global prices have been increased. He further commended the government for helping the union to construct parking lots for drivers across the country.

Responding to questions about monies they collect from their membership, he maintained that over the years, they have been collecting dues from their members to assist them in various ways such as paying fines, assisting in funerals, and in various other ways. According to him, with assistance from the Legal Aid Board, they were able to secure the release of 49 drivers who were being held in detention cells for minor offences.

He used the opportunity to call on drivers to be honest in the way they charge passengers and also urged passengers to resist drivers who charge them beyond the officially stipulated prices and reiterated his call for their members to refrain from taking hard drugs like kush and alcohol when they are on duty.

Responding to questions about fake manifests, he stated that there is nothing like fake manifests as had been reported, adding that manifests are printed by the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and all they do is issue the manifest to drivers.

In conclusion, he promised that his membership is always ready to work with the government to improve the work of drivers and to satisfy the needs of passengers, citing an incident at Taima where passengers drowned in an accident but because they were properly recorded in a manifest, they were able to identify the victims with the duplicate of the manifest.

*FIRST LADY OF SIERRA LEONE WITH OTHER DIGNITARIES SET TO COMMEMORATE UN WORLD DAY*

*By: Anthony Vandy*

The First Lady, *Her Excellency Fatima Maada Jabbe Bio*, and other Permanent Missions to the United Nations, including the Permanent Mission to the Republic of Nigeria, are preparing to mark the World Day for Sexual Abuse Prevention and Healing. Madam Fatima Maada Jabbe Bio, was recently appointed as the UNAIDS champion for adolescent girls and young women. She has emerged as a powerful advocate for the empowerment of women and girls, dedicating herself to eradicating gender inequalities, sexual and gender-based violence, and ensuring that girls and young women have access to the information and knowledge necessary to lead healthy lives.

*Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Jabbe Bio*, has been a prominent figure in the *"Hands Off Our Girls Campaign,"* an initiative launched by *President Dr.Julius Maada Bio* in December 2018, aimed at abolishing early child marriage and putting an end to sexual violence against women and girls. In 2022, she played a pivotal role in establishing the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, an annual commemoration held on *November 18th*.

Furthermore, Mrs. Maada Bio champions the cause of Education Plus, an initiative jointly launched by *UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women*. This initiative aims to prevent HIV infections by providing free universal, quality secondary education for all girls and boys in Africa, supplemented by comprehensive empowerment programs. Her unwavering dedication extends to the protection of women and girls facing various forms of abuse on a global scale.

It is important to note that Madam Dr. Fatima Maada Jabbe Bio's advocacy knows no boundaries of race, region, or geography. She fervently calls for a standalone resolution to establish a special day dedicated to child sexual abuse victims and survivors. Over the past four years, her tireless efforts have led to the implementation of numerous reforms by the government of Sierra Leone. These reforms are geared towards safeguarding children, especially girls, from the horrors of r**e, sexual abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and child marriage. The government has also introduced policies aimed at breaking down gender barriers, with a particular focus on increasing girls' enrollment in schools and providing free primary and secondary education to all children in Sierra Leone.

This remarkable commitment to the welfare and protection of children has garnered the attention of world leaders who share the vision of making the world a safer place for every girl child. This year's commemoration of the World Day for Sexual Abuse Prevention and Healing will feature the participation of Her Excellency Senate Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Her Excellency Ana Dias Lourenço, the First Lady of the Republic of Angola. The event will also showcase the talents of Oscinachi Kalu as the guest performing artist.

In summary, *Dr. Fatima Maada Jabbe Bio's* advocacy and dedication to the cause of women, girls, and child protection have made a significant impact both within Sierra Leone and on the global stage, attracting support and attention from leaders worldwide. The upcoming commemoration of the World Day for Sexual Abuse Prevention and Healing is a testament to her unwavering commitment to creating a safer and more equitable world for girls and young women.
