MY PARENTS SAID SHEāS āTOO BIGā FOR MEāBUT THEY DONāT KNOW WHAT IāM ABOUT TO DO
So hereās how the last Sunday dinner went down. I brought my fiancĆ©e, Mallory, over to meet my parents officially. Sheās tall, broad-shouldered, platinum blonde, and yeahāshe's not a size two. But Malloryās the warmest, sharpest, most loyal person Iāve ever met. She lights up every room she walks into, even if she doesnāt fit into whatever narrow box people expect.
My mom barely smiled when she hugged her. My dad wouldnāt even look her in the eye. The whole meal felt like sitting on top of a powder keg.
Then, as soon as Mallory stepped out to take a call, my mom leaned in like she couldnāt wait. She said, dead serious, āHoney⦠you sure you want to marry someone that big? Youāre a small guy. Itās not a good match.ā
My dad chimed in, talking about āhealthā and how Iād āresent it later.ā
I felt like the table flipped upside down. I couldnāt even process it at first. I just stared at them, thinking about how Mallory always cooks for me when Iām stressed, how she pays attention to every little thing I like, how sheās the first person Iāve ever felt completely safe with.
I didn't argue. I didnāt defend her. I just said nothing.
But later that night, when Mallory asked why I seemed off, I realized thereās something Iāve gotta decideāwhether I keep playing it safe with my family, or finally tell them what Iām really planning.
Because thereās something they donāt know yet.
Something Iāve been waiting to tell everyone.
