✨ Did You Know? Contemporary art has a major home right here in DC 🎨

The Rubell Museum has quickly become Washington’s contemporary art museum—opening in 2022 inside a beautifully restored 1906 former Randall Junior High School in Southwest DC, a site deeply rooted in the city’s Black educational history 🏫💛

And here’s the best part for locals: admission is free for DC residents 🙌

Inside, you’ll find a powerful mix of painting, sculpture, photography, video, and immersive installation—work that feels as alive and evolving as the city itself.

✨ Current Exhibition Highlights

🧵 “Basil Kincaid: Spirit in the Gift”
Kincaid’s first DC solo museum show transforms quilting into something expansive and contemporary. His monumental textile works—created during a Miami residency—blend identity, ancestry, improvisation, and community.

Think quilting meets jazz 🎷
Structure meets spontaneity
Memory meets movement

The result is deeply personal, yet universally resonant.

🧪 “Material Witness”
A sprawling exhibition featuring 30 artists working with unexpected materials—squid ink, Coca-Cola, ostrich eggs, lipstick, animal hides, and more 🍷🖤

Spread across 23 galleries, the show explores assemblage in bold new directions, connecting artists through material, meaning, and experimentation. Many are showing in DC—or at the museum—for the very first time.

From historic architecture to boundary-pushing contemporary work, this museum is reshaping the cultural landscape of the city one gallery at a time 🌆✨

May in Washington, DC has its own kind of magic 🌿✨—and one of its brightest stars is the golden alexander.

These cheerful, yellow umbels bloom across Cleveland Park from early spring into June, often returning later in summer for an encore performance 💛 They’re the kind of plant that quietly does it all: softening garden edges, filling seasonal gaps, and bringing light to even the shadiest corners.

At about three feet tall, golden alexanders work like a living carpet of sunshine ☀️ Their foliage stays lush through summer, sometimes turning burgundy in the fall, and even their dried flower heads hold structure and beauty into winter—proof that the garden never really goes silent here.

One of their best qualities? They spread 🌱

That means a handful of small plants can turn into a thriving patch over time—making them as budget-friendly as they are beautiful. They self-seed, divide easily, and happily expand with almost no fuss.

Even better, they’re incredibly adaptable. Full sun, shade, dry soil, clay—golden alexanders don’t ask for much. If you’re just starting your garden journey, they’re a forgiving, rewarding place to begin 🌿

And the pollinators agree 🐝

From butterflies to ladybugs—and even serving as a host plant for the black swallowtail—these blooms bring life and movement into the garden ecosystem.

Bonus: they’re stunning in a vase 💐

Cut a few stems for an airy, golden bouquet—or simply enjoy them swaying outdoors as bees drift from bloom to bloom.

Still need convincing? Take a walk through the Olmsted Woods at the National Cathedral in May. The forest floor glows with them like sunlight caught in green light 🌼

Sometimes the best gardens aren’t the most complicated—they’re the ones that simply grow joyfully.

Sometimes, you just know ✨🏡

For Hardin Lang and Alyse Nelson, that “knowing” came in the most unforgettable way. Standing on the cusp of a life-changing moment—welcoming their daughter Victoria—their Cleveland Park home went on the market the very same day she was born 👶💛

They didn’t hesitate. In fact, they made their offer from a hospital bed. And just like that, a new chapter began.

Drawn to the neighborhood’s big front porches, strong sense of community, and proximity to the Rosedale Conservancy 🌿, they had already felt the pull of Cleveland Park long before the timing sealed it.

Their story began long before the house—an unexpected flight-seat conversation, a shared connection to Burma, and a drink that turned into an all-night conversation until the bar closed ✈️🍷 From there, life unfolded: two children, Victoria and John William, a rescue dog named Tia 🐶, and a home filled with adventure, travel, and purpose.

Today, their house is a gathering place—filled with friends from around the world, holiday traditions, and the warmth of a family that lives life fully. Whether it’s cooking in their renovated kitchen, hosting neighbors, or hiking Rock Creek and Billy Goat Trail 🌲, their days are rooted in connection.

Their work in global service spans continents—but home is here, in Cleveland Park, where community still means something real.

And maybe that’s the heart of it: sometimes it’s a place, sometimes it’s people—but every once in a while, it’s both. And you just know 💫

As the Summer Solstice approaches ☀️🌊, we shift into the season of water—a time to build momentum, flow, and reconnect with our bodies in motion.

Think of a breaking ocean wave. Our bodies are meant to move the same way—rising, falling, stretching, flowing. When we stop moving, we don’t just “age”… we decondition. Strength fades, joints stiffen, energy dips. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Long before step counters and gym memberships, movement was simply life. Walking, lifting, gathering, reaching—constant, natural motion. Today, we have to be more intentional, but the solution is simpler than it seems.

Start small. Move often. Build it into your day:

✨ Balance on one leg while brushing your teeth
✨ Stretch while listening to a podcast
✨ Take the stairs (add a few calf raises!)
✨ Walk your errands, aim for those daily steps 🚶‍♀️
✨ Hang, squat, reach—just keep your body in motion

Add in a little structured exercise each week, but don’t underestimate the power of everyday movement. It all counts.

Movement = life 💛

So as we step into this new season, let’s flow, build strength, and keep moving forward—one small habit at a time.

Sometimes, the things we love most are just waiting for us to come back 🎶✨

When Cleveland Park neighbor Jessica Yergin first moved in, she put her flute away—tucked in the garage as life moved in a different direction. After studying at Manhattan School of Music and Barnard, performing at Carnegie Hall, and once imagining a career in orchestras, she chose a more “practical” path. And slowly, music faded.

Years later, in a quiet moment with her baby daughter, she picked it up again. What started as curiosity became commitment—relearning, rebuilding, and rediscovering her sound 🎼

From whistle tones to scales, from practice rooms to performance stages, Jessica’s journey came full circle this year when she won an amateur competition and performed at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention—this time with her own daughter in the audience 💛

When asked how she sounded, her daughter’s answer said it all:
“Mama really, really played.” 🥹

A beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to return to what you love—and that sometimes, the most meaningful paths are the ones we find our way back to.

Meet Bagel 🐾✨

From feral alley cat to full-on luxury living at Kitty Mansion, Bagel is truly living her best life in Cleveland Park 🏡💅 Alongside her five feline siblings and one pup, she’s traded the streets for sunshine-filled garden days, tree climbing adventures 🌳, and cozy snuggles with her BFF Poppy (aka April’s Pup of the Month) 🐶💛

When she’s not outside soaking up the good life, you’ll find Bagel hard at work… sleeping peacefully in the Native Conservation Landscaping office 😴💼 A true professional.

Her daily schedule? Simple. 5–10 minutes of mandatory “PT” (petting time) in the morning and afternoon 🐱💕—and then back to being effortlessly adorable and low-maintenance.

Bagel and Poppy have been inseparable from day one—playing, napping, and strolling the block together. Honestly, it doesn’t get cuter than this duo 🥹🐾

Safe to say, Cleveland Park has been quite the upgrade—and Bagel knows it.

More than 40 years of heart, service, and community 💛

When Cleveland Park resident Nancy Piness first walked through Iona’s .senior doors in the early 1980s, she had no idea it would become a lifelong journey. What started as a volunteer opportunity quickly grew into decades of advocacy, leadership, and deep connection—supporting older adults across DC every step of the way.

From organizing fundraisers and delivering meals 🚗🍽️ to serving as a leader on Iona’s Citizens Advisory Group, Nancy has witnessed firsthand how compassion and community can transform lives. Stories like her neighbor “P,” who gained access to vital resources through Iona, remind us that this work is about dignity, independence, and ensuring people receive the care they deserve.

Even with a career dedicated to aging services, Nancy found new perspective when she became a caregiver for her own parents—turning to Iona’s support groups for guidance and connection 🤝

Today, as a Legacy Circle member, she continues to invest in Iona’s future—believing that strong, sustained support ensures no one has to navigate aging alone.

“I grew up with Iona… and I’m growing older with Iona, too.” 💫
