More pathetic surrender from our corporate overlords.
Google just erased a name that's stood for nearly four centuries just because a tantrum-prone president told it to. Lake Ontario now reads "Lake America" for U.S. users, a change Raw Story verified, and Google didn't flinch.
It's the second time in two years the company has repainted the map to flatter Trump, folding like a valet the moment he snapped his fingers.
And for what? A trade-war tantrum. Talks with Canada collapsed, so Trump bludgeoned $20 billion in Canadian goods with 50% tariffs, and Trump grabbed the smallest of the Great Lakes as a prop.
Asked what message he meant to send, he shrugged out a "no message," then floated coming for the oceans next.
"When a company as rich and powerful as Google capitulates to one man's whims on a dime, then why on earth should it be trusted" with artificial intelligence, wrote attorney and podcaster Dina Sayegh Doll. Comedian Eric Idle and strategist Warren Kinsella are done with the service. Podcaster June Sternbach said it best: "genuinely disturbing," and "just pathetic."
Lake Ontario has carried that name since at least 1641, longer than the United States has existed.
Trump can command what his own government prints. He cannot command the truth, or the rest of the world, which is why his 2025 "Gulf of America" charade died the moment it crossed the border. Google chose which side it's on. The question is whether the rest of us will let a bully with a Sharpie rewrite the map.
