While breast cancer is the second-leading type of cancer death among U.S. women, Latinas are about 30% more likely to die from it than non-Hispanic White women. There are several factors that play into these statistics, which can include:
🗣️ The language gap
📄 Lack of health insurance
🍲 Diet and lifestyle
These barriers can also be compounded by racism and discrimination, which is why in-language, local education and outreach should be a central solution to increasing awareness and encouraging prevention.

Every form of representation matters for our community because it acknowledges that we are an important part of American society. It also shows young, impressionable minds that they can and should dream big. The fact that the U.S. Mint selected two incredible Latinas as part of its Women’s Quarter Program is a prime example. The 2023 release includes a Texas-born suffragist and civil rights leader who set the groundwork for women’s and Latino rights during the early 1900s. Next year’s release will include an incandescent Afro-Cuban immigrant turned naturalized citizen who inspired and empowered the Latino community with her singular voice and charisma.

September 28 is International Day for Universal Access to Information.

Information = power. So, why is it important for people to have access to information? Because informed citizens can make informed decisions, engage in Democratic government, and increase transparency - which aids citizens in having access to knowledge about how they are being governed, by whom, and holding them accountable.

Universal access to information means everyone has a right to seek, receive, and impart knowledge, an integral part of our inherent right to freedom of expression.

This year's theme is the importance of the online space for Access to Information. There will be discussions about the role governments play, how to secure the proper functioning of the internet and addressing the need for international cooperation to strengthen access to information.

Every year, the first Sunday after Labor Day is Grandparents Day– a day to celebrate the special relationship with our parents’ parents. Latino grandparents or abuelos usually hold a special place in our lives and upbringings. According to the Hispanic Research Center, one out of 7 Hispanic kids lived with a grandparent in 2019. More than a quarter of Latinos (26%) lived in multigenerational households in 2021, double than White multigenerational households (13%).

Do you still have your abuelos? Did you grow up with them? Tell us about your abuelos in the comments.

¿Aún tienes a tus abuelos? ¿Creciste con ellos? Cuéntanos sobre ellos en los comentarios.

Labor Day, observed on the first Monday of September, is rooted in the late nineteenth century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize workers' contributions to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being and to provide a fun celebration for workers and their families.
🇺🇸How will you celebrate Labor Day this year? 🎉 Let's celebrate those who strive for excellence and make a difference! 💪🏼🌟

The wage gap negatively impacts working mothers of all backgrounds, professions, and types of employment. So much so that August 15 represents how long it would take for mothers’ wages to “catch up” to fathers’ previous 12-month earnings. This costs mothers tens of thousands of dollars each year— Latina moms alone lose an average of $37,000.

We can fix this largely by creating and implementing policies that protect mothers and families like:
💵 Advancing equal pay
🤲 Providing paid family leave
📚Offering high-quality childcare

Follow and to learn more about how they are shedding light on and working toward solutions to address the critical issues women, mothers, and families face, like the wage gap.

When it comes to mental health, Latinos experience unique challenges that can keep them from accessing the care and assistance they need. Beyond the stigma surrounding mental health and the language and financial barriers for appropriate treatment, there are several layers of trauma that include immigration, acculturation, cultural and generational beliefs. This is why understanding and promoting self-care as a starting point to focus on mental health is an important first step. How do you self-care? Contrary to what we see on social media, self-care doesn’t require a spa or a visit to the nail salon.

Self-care can be as simple as allowing yourself to feel your emotions instead of pushing them back. It can mean learning how to create and enforce healthy boundaries in your life. It can be allowing yourself to be curious about what really makes you happy and exploring it. Or, it can be learning to take up the space you deserve in different aspects of your life where you’ve been playing small. Do you practice self-care and what does it look like for you?

Nelson Mandela’s relentless pursuit of justice over inequality, compassion over dehumanization, and forgiveness over hatred indisputably made him one of the most important figures of the 20th Century. However, that prominence doesn’t come without controversy. During , Cuba participated in the fight for South African freedom not once but twice in 1976 and 1988. Following his release from Robben Island, one of Nelson Mandela's first overseas trips was to Cuba, where he met with Fidel Castro, considered a heroic figure of liberation by numerous Black South Africans. This move received backlash from the anti-Castro faction in the United States. Of his ties to Castro and Cuba and the criticism it generated, Mandela said: “We are now being advised about Cuba by people who have supported the apartheid regime these last 40 years. No honorable man or woman could ever accept advice from people who never cared for us at the most difficult times.” In hindsight, it is easy to look back and condemn apartheid’s systemic racism and oppression, yet it’s important to also give proper context to the realities of that time. While Mandela was and may continue to be judged for his Cuban ties, it cannot and does not diminish his leadership and role in bringing democracy and reconciliation to South Africa over 30 years ago. Today Mandela would have been 105 years old, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation instituted a decade ago to celebrate his birth. This year’s call to action is to help end hunger and mitigate climate change by planting 1 million trees across the globe.

Equine culture has played an important role in Latino communities for centuries as a symbol of pride and identity throughout the region. Latinos’ rich cultural connection to horses ranges from transportation and agricultural needs to sports and even warfare. South America is home to four breeds whose origins can be traced back to equines brought by Spaniards to the Americans in the 16th Century: the Criollo, the Peruvian Horse, the Paso Fino and the Mangalarga Marchador. 🐎
