Here's a story I’d like to share with you from StoryCorps:
Temica Hunt came to StoryCorps with her mother Neocothia Bowens-Robinson, to talk about their family’s multi-generation love of roller skating.

Skate story by Necothia Bowens | “My daddy could do no wrong. He was everything to me. He taught us about church, taught us about family, and of course, he taught us about skating. He knew how to roll. The first time he ever took me skating, I was like, oh my god, that’s my dad! Look at him go! He was dancing on air. Daddy would guide my hand the way he wanted me to go…I remember a time I wanted to go skating so bad, but Daddy said, ‘No. You can’t have the car’. I was like, I need to go. It’s a Sunday night. Daddy is going to be asleep. I’ll be back in time…I did not get back in time. Daddy was late for work. He called Uncle Beanie and told him to go find me at the skating rink. Then I looked up and there was Uncle Beanie. I was like, ‘Oops, I gotta to go”...One thing that’s common at the rink is the music, the wood, and the flow. When you walk into a rink, that’s what you’re going to experience every time and THAT is freedom.”
Recorded by StoryCorps
OFSA partnered with StoryCorps as part of our “Everybody Has A Skate Story” effort in 2007. In the three years we worked with StoryCorp, we recorded over 130 stories in thirteen (13) states. It was exciting to have Necothia “Nikki” Bowen Robinson contacted for a follow up and a national feature. Researchers wanted to learn more about the mother daughter dynamic story since their recording with Khannie Butler in 2007.
Take the time to document your skate and family stories. You never know how the memories will impact the future.
