If you are a writer that has not yet been published, check out Submittable. And read. Read everything you can—the free books in front of Charles Avenue, the dollar book shelf at the library, and/or read the cornucopia of free ebooks that are printable/readable online (and leave the author a good review).

Love the words more than writing. Love literature more than scandalous entertainment. Turn the phone off and your bedside lamp (to read your books) on. And for me, reading scriptures helps (to read the poets, novelists, and prophets who keep something pure and creative inside when there were not even indoor plumbing or electricity)—that inspires me.

Trust the spark inside of you, and know that it was given to you for a reason. It was give to you to give it away (to your readers), to help and elevate them. You will reap (the quality and quantity) of what you sow (including your intention).

This is why Julia Cameron writes in The Artist’s Way, “G-d, I’ll take care of the quality, you take care of the quantity.”

In other words, keep going; don’t give up. Love yourself, your Creator, and love your audience more. What will be, will be, but you will always have your craft and what you put into it. As the saying goes, you will reap what you sow. (Keep sowing good seed).

I recently saw “The Silencing,” screenplay written by Micah Ranum of Canada, originally written in 2007-2008 under the title, “A Good Hunter.” I have not seen such a well written screenplay since “Eastern Promises.”

If you think character, setting, dialogue, grammar, craft, and story twists are solely in the realm of novels, then you are mistaken. If you believe that entertainment, relative morality, and mind-bending existentialism are in the dominion solely of the novel, then you are limited.

Read everything. Love the exceptional. Elevate not only your readers’ expectations but also their souls. These goals are why words exist al all.

Just be humble, and live a little more every day.
