President Abraham Lincoln spent his summers in this cottage on the Soldierā€™s Home grounds, located today in the Petworth neighborhood of DC. While spending his summers there in 1862-1864, Lincoln was working on the Emancipation Proclamation, and issued the preliminary proclamation while living there on September 22, 1862. When touring Lincolnā€™s Cottage , add on the self-guided garden tour to see more of the Armed Forces Retirement Home grounds, including a view of the Capitol.
