Washington, D.C. leads the nation with the highest percentage of Black-owned businesses — with 15% of classifiable firms owned by Black entrepreneurs. This makes the District not just the nation’s capital, but a capital of Black innovation and enterprise.

Another powerful fact: Black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., and D.C. ranks among the top cities where their businesses thrive.

Wednesdays are for women who revolutionized systems — and Dorothy B. Porter did just that.

A Howard University graduate and pioneering librarian, Porter didn’t just work within the system she rewrote it. While at Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, she reimagined the Dewey Decimal System to properly classify and uplift works by and about people of African descent.

At a time when Black stories were often miscategorized or excluded, her work ensured they had a rightful place in the archive and in history.

Her legacy lives on in every researcher, scholar, and student who has benefited from her groundbreaking classification model.
