APA Journals

APA Journals The latest research and information from journals published by the American Psychological Association.

-APA began its long publishing history with the Proceedings of the American Psychology Association in 1892.

-APA demonstrated its dedication to the dissemination of knowledge in the 1920s with the purchase and launch of two journals, both of which are still leading journals today.

-The 1950s-1970s saw major expansion and specialization in the behavioral and social sciences worldwide; APA began p

ublishing many influential titles, including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

-In 1990, APA created the Educational Publishing Foundation (EPF), a specialty imprint of the American Psychological Association Journals Program to provide innovative publishing services to psychology and the larger behavioral and social sciences community and to support the development of specialized or interdisciplinary journals. The imprint has unique resources and adaptability to support our society publishing partners and developing specialized or interdisciplinary journals.

-In 2001, the launch of PsycARTICLES®, APA’s full-text database, changed the way researchers access and interact with scholarly knowledge.

-Today, APA continues to grow and develop its influential publishing program, which now includes more than 75 top-quality journals in the behavioral and social sciences.

When gambling, having the ability to choose your own options is believed to increase senses of control over winning even if choice has no effect on the likelihood of the outcome. Although this idea is well established, recent findings challenge the effect choice really has on gambling thinking and decision-making. An article published in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors extends this challenge by looking at other predictors of false probability beliefs, such as those related to superstition. It is currently unknown how COVID-19 infection control measures impacted child and adolescent psychiatry inpatients and families. A recent study published in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry (AJO) explores youth and families’ experiences of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization in Canada during the height of the pandemic (2020–2022). Findings highlight the need for policymakers to consider how infection control policies will affect child and adolescent psychiatry patients and their families, the importance of including youth and families in policy development, and the necessity of protecting children and youth from collateral harms by always ensuring their best interests are a primary consideration. Posttraumatic stress (PTS) can occur after exposure to a traumatic event. The first-line treatments for PTS largely focus on approaching memory of the traumatic event and related secondary evaluations, such as shame and guilt (i.e., have a primary cognitive or top-down intervention focus). However, PTS has been formulated by theorists in a number of ways. According to new research in Traumatology, interoceptive-based interventions—such as arousal-related exposures, integrative exercise, and trauma-informed yoga—show promise in the treatment of PTS. Many employees engage in work during their private time either by thinking and talking about it or performing work-related tasks. Such home-to-work transitions (HWT) are generally considered to disturb psychophysiological unwinding after work (i.e., recovery). In a study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, researchers replicate and theoretically extend past research to foster our understanding of both psychological and physiological recovery. Children often copy the actions of others that are irrelevant, non-functional, and at times costly to achieving goals. The role models they choose to copy such actions from, or "overimitate", depend heavily on context. Are parents preferred models, and what about when children are shown that these actions are not needed? Research from Mackie et al. (2025) helps to answer these questions by pitching 5-year-old children's parents against a stranger in a novel game to collect marbles from a puzzle box. A new study in Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment—selected as noteworthy and impactful for the field by the journal's Editor—challenges the traditional view of emptiness as a fixed trait tied only to borderline personality disorder. Using a 14-day experience sampling method with 120 participants, researchers explored how personality dysfunction, identity disturbance, and emotion dysregulation relate to both the intensity and instability of emptiness.
