I'm 75, a widower, and most of my days pass quietly—reading, tending the garden, taking the occasional walk. That calm shattered the day a group of teenagers, fresh out of high school, moved in next door. I hoped, even prayed, they'd be respectful.

The first night? A party until five in the morning. Music shook the walls. People shouted in the yard. We all crossed our fingers, thinking it was a one-off. It wasn't. Night after night, the noise continued. I began to fall ill from the constant lack of sleep.

Eventually, I went over and knocked on their door. A boy opened it, grinned, and said, "Old man, shut your mouth and go home. We'll do what we want. I've got connections—you can't touch us."

And he wasn't wrong. No one stepped in. No one cared.

Then one afternoon, I noticed a sign taped to their door:
"NO ONE SLEEPS TONIGHT!"

What could that possibly mean? We hadn't been sleeping anyway.

That evening, I braced myself for more noise. It started the same—blaring music, voices rising. But a couple of hours in, everything changed. The music cut off abruptly. I went to the window and looked out.
