The Igbo calendar revolves around four sacred market days—

💥Eke,
💥Orie,
💥Afọ, and
💥Nkwo

It is always in this sequence. Know this. It is not about just knowing their names but the sequence as well. You cannot start from Afọ to read the Igbo week.

The Igbo days shape not just commerce, but time, spirituality, and societal rhythm. This four-day cycle is the foundation of Igbo timekeeping, with seven weeks (Izu Asaa) making a full lunar month (Ọnwa). It is also the cardinal points.

🌀EKE – The first day, symbolizing beginnings, identity, and destiny (Chi). Associated with the Fire element.

🌀ORIE – The day of purity, reflection, and healing. Associated with Water element.

🌀AFỌ – A day linked to justice, prosperity, and agriculture. Earth Element.

🌀NKWO – represents gathering, exchange, and community bonding. Element of Air.

The Igbo days is used in the study and understanding of:

🦅Time and Existence,
🦅Trade and Economy
🦅Spiritual Balance
🦅Social Structure

Each market day has special totems and taboos tied to it, which vary by community.

But the sequence is same across the entire ala Igbo.
Also know that the four Igbo market days are more than commerce—they shape identity, spirituality, and the flow of life. We have nnukwu and obere for each of the days but...
