In honor of World Pride, we’re revisiting a project we produced for Yahoo News that captures the triumph of relentless activism in the face of government discrimination.
The documentary, led by award-winning investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, follows a group of “archive activists” — scholars, attorneys, and advocates — who uncovered the history of the federal government’s systematic persecution of the LGBTQ+ community, from the "Lavender Scare" of the 1950s through the legalization of gay marriage in 2015.
The film’s title, Uniquely Nasty, is drawn directly from federal documents used to describe the government’s opinion of employees suspected of being gay. Featuring narration from actors George Takei and Matt Bomer, the film premiered at DC’s E Street Cinema and went on to screen at the Library of Congress, Smithsonian, National Archives, Department of Justice, and across the country. It earned an Edward R. Murrow Award and a Webby nomination.
Rewatching it today, we’re reminded how quickly rights can be rolled back, voices silenced, and history erased. As we celebrate World Pride here in our hometown of DC, we’re more committed than ever to telling stories like this — and we’re gearing up for more Long Story Short documentaries ahead.
