Two decades after graduation, they banished me to a corner table at the reunion while she showed off her massive ring, boasting, "My husband is a millionaire businessman." I refused to argue; I merely looked down at my phone and answered, "How interesting…" Moments later, her husband entered the room and addressed me in a way that stunned everyone into total silence.
"If you ever find yourself needing a job, let me know. My husband is well-connected with half the business world in New York and could help you land something decent," Lauren told me, staring at my shoes as if she had just granted me a massive favor.
I smiled warmly and raised my glass of water.
Twenty years had passed since we graduated from high school, but it took a mere ten minutes at this event to see that certain people still judged others the exact same way they did at seventeen: by their wardrobe, their vehicle, and the prestige of the last name they could drop.
My name is Emily Carter, I am thirty-eight years old, and I was raised in Yonkers. When I was a student, my family lived a very modest lifestyle because my parents poured almost everything they had into a small metal structures workshop. I wore the exact same uniform on repeat, carried the same backpack for years, and took public transit everywhere. Lauren, on the flip side, was the popular girl: brand-new clothes, wild parties, lavish trips, and an uncanny ability to make anyone who didn't have those things feel completely unimportant.
Following graduation, I studied business administration overseas and, upon my return, I joined the family business. Over the decades, that modest workshop transformed into Carter Holdings, a massive corporation featuring real estate projects, industrial parks, and logistics services. But virtually no one from my graduating class had any idea about it. I never saw a reason to broadcast my success.
The sole person who knew about my actual life was Rachel, my closest friend from school.
The reunion was hosted at an upscale hotel in Midtown Manhattan. When I arrived, Jason, our former class president, took one look at my unassuming dress and my simple fabric handbag, then pointed toward a table shoved away near a pillar in the very back.
"You are sitting over there. Everything is already arranged."
A few minutes later, he welcomed Lauren with huge hugs and seated her at a prime table right next to the stage.
Rachel quietly explained to me that Jason had organized the tables based on "how successful each person had become."
I chuckled.
"A seat at a dinner table doesn't change a person's actual worth."
Then Lauren strutted in wearing a designer dress, holding a flashy clutch, and showing off a diamond ring that she made sure to display every time she moved her hands.
During the dinner service, she talked endlessly about her husband, Michael.
"He works in real estate. He manages massive developments, knows all the elite investors, and spends his entire life in boardrooms signing contracts. I don't even work anymore. He insists his wife shouldn't ever have to worry about dollars."
She went on to explain that they lived in a gorgeous residence in Scarsdale, had a private chauffeur, that he closed million-dollar deals, and that if Jason wanted, Michael could score him a huge opportunity at Carter Holdings.
When I heard the name of my company, I gently placed my fork down on my plate.
Rachel looked over at me.
"What is wrong?"
"Nothing just yet."
But something simply wasn't adding up.
Lauren described the exclusive gated neighborhood where she lived, the beautiful front garden of her house, and even a sleek black SUV that belonged to "her husband."
I knew that specific property far too well.
And I knew that exact SUV, too.
At that very moment, my phone buzzed.
It was a direct message from my personal assistant:
"Ms. Emily, Michael is asking if he can come in two hours late tomorrow. After taking Mr. Robert and Mrs. Susan home today, he is going to pick up his wife from the reunion."
I read the text twice.
Michael had been employed as my parents’ driver for the past twelve years.
I lifted my head.
Barely ten meters away from me, Lauren was still busy telling everyone that her husband was a powerful real estate tycoon.
And she had just offered me a job using the supposed connections of the very man who worked for my family.
