Humanitarian workers are the frontline responders to the world’s worst crises. They are also regularly targeted for killings, kidnappings, and detainment.

As a global community, we are very good at expressing concern and condemnation over these incidents. In the U.S., the sentiment has been a meme for years: “thoughts and prayers.” The theme of this year’s World Humanitarian Day is a call to do more. The campaign message?

The time for concern is over. The time for consequence is now.

Humanitarian aid is already chronically underfunded. To make the funding that does exist count, those who target humanitarian workers and impede aid must face consequences. At least 1,000 humanitarian workers have been killed in the last three years, a historic surge, yet the laws in place protecting medical and humanitarian workers are regularly ignored by the perpetrators and those breaches functionally ignored by the international community.

Human trafficking has many faces. The victims aren’t always who you would expect; the reasons are also often unexpected.

This year’s theme is “Trapped Behind The Scam” — a reminder that victims of trafficking are often recruited as much as coerced, and that recruitment often looks legitimate at first. In this disturbing, growing trend, victims are lured through fake job ads, then forced to perpetuate online scams run by large organized crime rings. The hub for this phenomenon is in Southeast Asia, but it is spreading rapidly in regions throughout the world.

Building a world where all people are free and able to control their own destiny requires we challenge our own assumptions about human trafficking, forced labor, and modern slavery — and build cross-border cooperation that recognizes this complexity.
