Originally a working lunch for one of the largest Indian communities outside of India, bunny chow—curry served in a hollowed-out half or quarter loaf of bread and eaten with the hands—is symbolic of Durban, South Africa. Today, it can be found throughout the city, both in family-run canteens or historic hotels.
South Africa’s distinctive curry-in-a-loaf dish began life as a portable meal for Indian labourers and has since put its sunny seaside home city on the food map.
