NSF STAFF DEFEND SCIENCE: Employees from National Science Foundation (NSF) are defending science in a new declaration to the Administration. Their draft lays out a list of 8 “ongoing harms that undermine one of America’s foremost pathways to knowledge and innovation, which fosters the next generation of problem solvers – scientists, engineers, and educators.”
"If left unchecked,” it warns, “these deleterious actions will dismantle NSF and the scientific infrastructure that is critical to our nation’s security and economic prosperity."

The new declaration echoes similar efforts from NIH and EPA.

FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH LEADS TO BABY'S CURE: In a world first, physicians at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have used DNA editing to correct deficiency in an infant. The advance--built on decades of federally funded research--could pave the wave for personalized therapies for other rare diseases. Coincidentally, the FDA official responsible for overseeing gene therapy regulation recently resigned because he disagrees with Secretary of HHS Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The technique used on a 9½-month-old boy with a rare condition has the potential to help people with thousands of other uncommon genetic diseases.

Vaccine hesitancy in this country is a public health emergency that's likely to do serious harm to our children in the coming years.

While much of the country is focused on the spiraling measles outbreak, experts warn that whooping cough and other preventable diseases could get much worse with falling vaccination rates and Trump’s slashing of public health infrastructure.

Ask your doctor if you or someone in your family needs to be vaccinated for the measles, particularly if you're an area of the country where the disease is on the rise. (Looking at you, Texas.)

Measles cases are on the rise among children, but did you know if you are an adult who has not had the vaccination or the disease, you may need the MMR shot, too? https://wb.md/4hS9j0E

U.S. RESEARCH ON PREMATURITY IS AT RISK: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collects crucial data about maternal and perinatal mortality rates -- which are incredibly high in the United States -- in its Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring (PRAMS) system. That activity is now on hold, pending review of PRAMS by the new Administration. According to Dean Megan Ranney of Yale University, in a post on LinkedIn, topline information that's already been collected is available from PRAMS. But researchers can't download complete data from the system or upload new data to it. Full access to the database is absolutely crucial to research that could save the lives of mothers and babies in the United States. Call your legislators and demand that PRAMS functionality be restored without delay. https://www.cdc.gov/prams/index.html
