Elon Musk is demanding the immediate release of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, according to posts attributed to the X owner this week.
Musk called the George Floyd case a “miscarriage of justice” that he says fueled nationwide riots, billions in property damage, and what he described as the “defund-the-police disaster.”
In his remarks, Musk pointed to Floyd’s autopsy and argued that Floyd’s death resulted from “a massive fentanyl overdose combined with heart issues, not Chauvin’s knee restraint.” He claimed the narrative of Chauvin as a “cold-blooded murderer” was pushed by media and activists, sparking unrest and a crime wave that “still haunts American cities.”
Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in 2021 after a jury found he used excessive force during Floyd’s 2020 arrest in Minneapolis. He was sentenced to 22.5 years in state prison and later received a concurrent federal sentence. Chauvin is currently appealing.
Musk argued that Chauvin was “railroaded” in a highly charged trial amid intense political pressure. “The truth about the drugs is impossible to ignore,” Musk said in the posts. “It’s time to free an officer who was doing his job in a chaotic situation. America deserves justice, not political show trials.”
The comments have reignited fierce debate online over policing, criminal justice, and media narratives surrounding the 2020 protests.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Floyd’s death a homicide caused by “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression,” while also noting fentanyl and heart disease as contributing conditions.
