Chinese President Xi Jinping has replied to a letter from a U.S. youth education exchange delegation comprised of teachers and students from the Diamond Minds Transformational Leadership Academy in Miami, Florida, the University of Florida and the Miami-Dade College.

In the reply letter dated January 7, Xi said he was pleased to learn that the teachers and students had a pleasant and rewarding journey in China, and felt their strong interest and sincere feelings for Chinese culture.

Noting that the hope of China-U.S. relations lies in the people, and its future relies on the youth, Xi said since the launch of the "50,000 in Five Years" initiative, over 40,000 U.S. youth have actively participated, opening a window for them to understand the real China and building a bridge to carry forward the friendship between the two peoples.

This fully demonstrates that fostering friendly exchanges and cooperation is the shared aspiration of the people of both China and the United States, he said.

Xi said he looks forward to more American youth joining the cause of China-U.S. friendship, becoming a new generation of envoys of friendship between the two countries, and making greater contributions to enhancing people-to-people exchanges and promoting the development of bilateral relations.

The teachers and students of the U.S. delegation wrote a letter to Xi recently, reviewing their visit to China in October 2025 and expressing gratitude for the "50,000 in Five Years" initiative proposed by Xi, which has provided a valuable opportunity to enhance mutual understanding between youth of the two countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump has recently been briefed on potential military strike options against Iran and is seriously weighing whether to authorize an attack, The New York Times reported, citing multiple U.S. officials.

According to the officials, no final decision has been made, but Trump is actively considering the use of force. The options presented to him reportedly include strikes on nonmilitary targets in Tehran.

Against the backdrop, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone on Saturday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two discussed the situation in Iran as well as developments in Gaza and Syria, Axios reporter Barak Ravid said on X, citing a U.S. source.

Meanwhile, Israel is closely monitoring developments inside Iran. Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir convened multiple security assessment meetings between January 9 and 10. Israeli security officials said Israel currently has "no intention of launching an attack" on Iran, but has strengthened defensive readiness and is preparing for "any contingency."

Iran has been grappling with protests since December 28, sparked by rising prices and currency depreciation. During the past two weeks, demonstrations and unrest have occurred in multiple locations, resulting in casualties. China Media Group's correspondent in Tehran reported that the situation nationwide was calm on Saturday night, with no major protests reported in key areas of the capital. Authorities dispersed around 370 people who attempted to gather in Tehran, reports said.

Iran has also been experiencing internet disruptions. As of Saturday afternoon, Tehran remained largely offline. CMG correspondent reported that local residents were still able to access major domestic news websites and video platforms. Essential services such as food delivery and ride-hailing apps continued to function normally. Traffic conditions were stable, and supplies of food and basic necessities in supermarkets remained sufficient.

Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez vowed to free the Maduro family and condemned the U.S. strike as an act of criminal aggression against the Venezuelan people during a televised address on Saturday, January 10 – a day after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency and blocking any court attempts to seize Venezuelan oil revenues held in U.S. Treasury accounts.

Speaking at a communal fair in Sucre Municipality, east of Caracas, on Saturday, Rodríguez vowed not to rest until Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady are returned to Venezuela. She also affirmed that she will continue to condemn the U.S. strike against Venezuela on January 3, saying it will "go down in history as a great stain" on relations between the two countries.

On January 3, the U.S. military launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela and captured President Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, flying them to New York, where they are facing federal charges including narcotics and terrorism allegations; both have pleaded not guilty.

Yván Gil, Venezuela's minister of foreign affairs, rejected the U.S. drug-trafficking accusations in a statement on Telegram on Saturday, saying Venezuela has never been a drug-trafficking state and asserting the country's resolve to defend its sovereignty with peace and dignity.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, on the contrary, had proposed to offer her Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump – a notion the Norwegian Nobel Institute clarified on Friday is not permitted, stating a Nobel Prize may not be transferred to others. The Nobel Peace Prize given to Machado last year has long been yearned for by Trump, who believes his effort in "ending eight wars" would warrant the honor. Trump said in a Fox News interview on Friday that meeting with Machado would be a "great honor," despite earlier comments that Machado "doesn't have the support within or the respect" within Venezuela for her to govern.

A devastating mass shooting unfolded on the night of January 9, 2026, in the rural community of Cedarbluff in northeast Mississippi. According to law enforcement, 24-year-old Daricka Moore opened fire at three separate locations, killing six people, including a 7-year-old child and a pastor, before he was taken into custody the next day.

Four of the victims were members of the suspect’s own family, while two others were unrelated adults. Authorities have charged the suspect with first-degree murder, and prosecutors indicated the charges could be upgraded to capital murder as the investigation continues; law enforcement said he was not previously known to police and acted alone.

Officials have not yet publicly disclosed a motive for the attack.

The U.S. oil embargo against Venezuela threatens the lives, health and well-being of millions of the country's citizens and must be condemned as a violation of international law, Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"The unlawful actions of the United States must be condemned. This is not only about oil. Oil is the lifeblood of the Venezuelan economy, and draining it means putting the lives and health of millions of Venezuelan citizens at risk," he said.

Furthermore, Melik-Bagdasarov noted that Venezuela is ready to sell oil to all partners, including the United States, but Washington's harsh and neocolonial rhetoric is impeding the normalization of supplies to the global market.

Russia has previously voiced its resolute solidarity with Venezuela and urged the liberation of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, emphasizing that the actions of the United States violate international law.

"We do not want to be Americans," Greenland's party leaders announced in a joint statement issued on Friday.

The statement, titled "We Stand Together as One People," said that Greenland's future must be decided by the Greenlandic people themselves, Danish broadcaster DR reported.

"We, as Greenlandic party leaders, wish once again to emphasize our desire for the United States' disregard for our country to come to an end," the statement read.

The party leaders also said that Greenland will continue to cooperate with the United States and other Western countries in the future, but work concerning Greenland's future must be carried out with the Greenlandic people and be prepared on the basis of international law and the Self-Government Act.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said a deal will be made for the United States to acquire Greenland in an "easy way" or "hard way," adding that he was "going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not."
