The 15th National Games—the first co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao—is setting a new benchmark for smart event management by integrating cutting-edge technology into every aspect of its operations.

Intelligent security and patrols

At the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center, advanced security is maintained by patrol robots and robot dogs. Utilizing a powerful combination of 5G, artificial intelligence, IoT, cloud computing, and big data, these units provide police command centers with real-time visual feedback. Equipped with obstacle avoidance radar, the robots constantly monitor the venue's surroundings, and citizens can quickly initiate emergency calls via a dedicated button on the unit.

Critical infrastructure diagnostics

The power supply for the Games is also secured by specialized technology. Robot dogs from the Shenzhen power supply bureau are deployed to perform vital monitoring tasks such as real-time equipment temperature checks, electric meter identification and detection of abnormal noises.

All collected data is instantly transmitted to an AI diagnostic system. This intelligent system allows staff to quickly and accurately identify potential hazards, enabling the prompt and proactive resolution of power supply issues, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted competition throughout the event.

The Canadian city of Burnaby has taken a decisive and necessary step toward reconciliation, issuing a formal apology for decades of systemic discrimination against people of Chinese descent. The apology, delivered at a special council meeting on Saturday, provides a significant acknowledgement of the lasting harm caused by racist municipal policies that spanned over fifty years.

Mayor Mike Hurley formally accepted responsibility on behalf of the city for the discriminatory laws and regulations that were in effect between 1892 and 1947.

These policies severely restricted the rights and opportunities of Chinese Canadians, including barring them from municipal employment, restricting land ownership, limiting business operations and denying them the right to vote.

In his remarks, Hurley described the goals of the historical injustice as "exclusion."

The apology was the culmination of a two-year historical review and an extensive community engagement process, which included dialogue events and materials delivered in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. To solidify the city's commitment, the council unanimously voted to officially repeal three historical discriminatory bylaws that, though no longer enforced, remained in the books.

"Our actions made life harder for them and for all community members of Chinese descent. For that, we are deeply sorry today," said Hurley, who also recognized the resilience and indispensable contributions of the Chinese Canadian community who persevered despite the barriers imposed by the city. "[They] ran successful businesses, helped to clear land and construct railway lines, and established farms that fed Burnaby and the region."

The city has emphasized that the apology is not a merely symbolic gesture but a firm commitment to concrete action. This commitment includes promoting awareness of Chinese Canadian contributions to Burnaby's history and providing cultural competency training to city staff, ensuring that this dark chapter of the city's past is never repeated.

China welcomed its Shenzhou-20 astronauts back to earth on Friday, Nov. 14, after a hit from suspected space debris compromised their original return vessel.
Their return from China’s space station was originally scheduled for Nov. 5 but was postponed after slight cracks were detected on the window of the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft’s return capsule, believed to be caused by an impact from tiny space debris. It marks the first successful implementation of an alternative return procedure in China’s space station program history.
The astronauts set a new record for the longest in-orbit stay among Chinese astronaut crews, and Commander Chen D**g became the first Chinese astronaut to accumulate over 400 days in orbit.

Recently, Chinese researchers identified, for the first time, micrometer-scale crystalline Fe2O3 in the forms of hematite (α-Fe2O3) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) in lunar soils, formed by large-scale impact events, the China National Space Administration (CNSA), Shandong University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly announced on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The discovery is based on analysis of lunar soil samples returned by the Chang'e-6 mission from the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin, providing credible evidence for the presence of Fe2O3 on the lunar surface and challenging the traditional understanding of lunar surface redox states.
This finding, published in the journal Science Advances, will offer important scientific support for future lunar research and deepen understanding of the moon's evolutionary history.

According to the study, the formation of hematite is likely closely linked to past large-scale impact events on the moon. Such impacts can generate a heterogeneous v***r environment characterized by locally elevated oxygen fugacity, where Fe2+ ions are oxidized to higher valence states, leading to the desulfurization of troilite (FeS). Through subsequent v***r-phase deposition, this process forms micrometer-scale crystalline hematite particles.

Notably, the intermediate products of these reactions – magnetite and maghemite – are magnetic and may serve as mineral carriers of the magnetic anomalies surrounding the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin on the lunar farside.

The research provides the first sample-based confirmation that highly oxidizing minerals such as hematite can exist on the lunar surface despite its reducing environment. It also sheds new light on the moon's redox state and the reason for the generation of its magnetic anomalies.

The SPA Basin, where Chang'e-6 landed, is the largest and oldest known impact basin on any rocky body in the solar system. The scale of the impact that formed it far exceeded that of other regions on the moon, providing a unique setting for studying exceptional geological processes. The successful return of samples from within the basin's interior by the 2024 Chang'e-6 mission laid the foundation for this breakthrough discovery.

Chile is heading into a pivotal election on Sunday, Nov. 16. A vote that will determine the country’s next president, reshape its congress, and signal where Chile’s political future is headed.

After years marked by social unrest, economic pressures, and a rejected constitutional rewrite, many voters are prioritizing security, stability, and jobs.

With voting now compulsory and several parties competing across the political spectrum, the outcome could influence issues ranging from public safety and economic policy to migration and regional political trends in Latin America.

Political and business figures from China and the United States on Thursday, Nov. 13, discussed cooperation opportunities in agriculture and artificial intelligence at the 9th annual gala of China General Chamber of Commerce Chicago (CGCC Chicago) in downtown Chicago.

Themed "Driving Forward Together," the event gathered some 800 participants from both countries.

Addressing the gala in a video keynote speech, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng said President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump recently held a successful meeting in Busan, South Korea, recalibrating the direction of the China-U.S. relations at a crucial moment again, and "injecting confidence into both countries and the world."

The 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China adopted at its fourth plenary session the recommendations for formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan, which has drawn a grand blueprint for China's economic and social development in the coming five years, and will open up broader space for cooperation between the business communities of China and the United States.

"A healthy and steady developing China-U.S. relationship serves the common interests of all sides and meets the shared expectations of our two peoples and the international community," Xie said, adding that "the success of China and the U.S. is an opportunity for one another, and our bilateral relations are win-win in nature."

There are over 7,000 Chinese-invested companies operating in the United States today, and about 80,000 American businesses have invested in China. "They are the main force and beneficiaries of China-U.S. cooperation," Xie said.

It is estimated that CGCC's Chinese member companies alone have cumulatively invested over 140 billion U.S. dollars in the U.S., supporting more than 1 million jobs. American companies, at the same time, have invested a total of over 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars in China.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson enumerated the contributions of Chinese companies to the development of the city of Chicago, praising that Chinese investments have created good jobs, foster technological advancements, and are truly "enriching all of our respective communities."

"With the continued partnership and collaboration with powerhouses like China, we can achieve our shared goals of sustainable growth, technology exchange and innovation," Johnson said.

In his welcome speech, CGCC Chicago Chairman Ni Pin called on China and the United States to advance innovation and creativity together and achieve a future of shared prosperity together.

CGCC Chicago is a non-profit member-based organization representing Chinese companies in the nine Midwest states in the United States.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered the Justice Department to investigate any alleged links between convicted s*x trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and prominent Democrats.

President Trump called for the move on social media on Friday, Nov. 14, after private Epstein emails mentioning Trump were released to the public earlier in the week.

Bondi said she has assigned Jay Clayton, a top federal prosecutor, to lead the probe.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he would be asking Bondi, the DOJ and the FBI for an investigation into Epstein’s “involvement and relationship” with former U.S President Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, LinkedIn founder and Democratic donor Reid Hoffman, and other prominent Democrats.

In his post, Trump called the matter “the Epstein Hoax, involving Democrats, not Republicans,” and called for “many other institutions and people”, like financial giant JPMorgan Chase, to be investigated in the probe.

Chileans voted for a new president and parliament on Sunday, Nov. 16.

The ruling left-wing coalition is facing off against a possible right-wing windfall in the legislature, as crime, unemployment, and immigration were the leading issues in the election cycle.

Three presidential candidates are leading in the polls. Jeannette Jara of the Communist Party, and part of the ruling government coalition, has maintained a healthy lead, while far-right Antionio Kast of Chile’s Republican Party, holds popular support. Johannes Kaiser of the National Libertarian Party and far-right candidate Evelyn Matthei are still polling in the race, though with lower support.

The presidential runoff vote will take place on Dec. 14, if none of the candidates surpass 50% in Sunday’s vote.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on Sunday, Nov. 16, criticized Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent erroneous remarks on China's Taiwan as going "too far" and "dangerous," local media reported.

At a party meeting in Nagasaki Prefecture, Noda, now leader of main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), said Takaichi "went too far" and relations between Japan and China have reached a very tense situation, Kyodo News reported.

"It seems she thinks she is popular with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party supporters. I think it is even more dangerous," Noda said of Takaichi.
On a Fuji TV program on Sunday, CDPJ policy chief Satoshi Honjo said that Takaichi's Diet responses "show a lack of understanding of the security legislation," and that her awareness of the Chinese mainland's positioning regarding Taiwan was also insufficient, according to the report.

At a Diet meeting on November 7, Takaichi claimed that a Taiwan emergency involving the use of military vessels and military force from the Chinese mainland could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan. According to legislation, Japan's Self-Defense Forces could exercise the right of collective self-defense if such a situation is recognized as "survival-threatening."

Takaichi later insisted that her remarks were in line with the government's longstanding view, and she had no intention to retract the remarks.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, Nov. 14, rolled back tariffs on more than 200 food products, including beef, coffee, tea, tropical fruits, fruit juices, cocoa, oranges and tomatoes, amid mounting consumer complaints about high grocery prices. The administration said the affected goods cannot be produced in sufficient quantities domestically.

The administration said the president authorized the exemptions after making “substantial progress” in trade negotiations with other countries. Just a day earlier, Trump announced trade frameworks with Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador and Ecuador.

The tariff exemptions took effect retroactively at midnight on Thursday, Nov. 13, the White House said.

Industry groups welcomed the move. These exemptions “should help consumers, whose morning cup of coffee will hopefully become more affordable, as well as U.S. manufacturers, which utilize many of these products in their supply chains and production lines," FMI-Food Industry Association president Leslie Sarasin said in a statement.

But Democrats cast Friday’s move as an acknowledgment that Trump's policies were hurting American consumers. Richard Neal, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, said that the administration was “putting out a fire that they started and claiming it as progress.”
