As one of the few University-owned commercial radio stations in America, WHUR serves both Washington’s business and public communities. History of WHUR

WHUR 96.3 FM – Howard University is Washington’s only stand-alone radio station and one of the few

university-owned commercial radio stations in America, broadcasting since 1971 to nearly a half million listeners daily in five states and can now be heard around the globe on the web at whur.com. The first radio station in the Washington area to broadcast in HD, WHUR is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious NAB Marconi for Best Urban Station of the Year and NAB Crystal Radio Award for Excellence in Community Service. Howard University’s WHUR-FM Radio officially converted to digital broadcasting on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, becoming the first commercial radio station in the metropolitan Washington area to use a digital signal or HD RadioTM technology. A little more than two-and-a-half years later, on November 16, 2006, WHUR-WORLD, 96.3 HD-2 was launched, offering new programming options of a progressive mix of music and information and the same high-quality sound as our parent station WHUR. Musical programming on WHUR-WORLD is jazz-intensive and also features blues, soul, hip-hop, African-American folk, and world music. Other periodic short- and long-form programming elements include “Black History Moments,” fitness tips, and social and cultural specials, as well as provocative weekly talk shows shedding light on issues ranging from money matters to domestic abuse. Called “the other side of WHUR,” the WHUR-WORLD signal is also streamed on www.whurworld.com. WHUR WORLD was the distinguished recipient of the 2008 NAB HD Radio Multicast award for its innovative work in programming on a multicast channel.

Chadwick Boseman has officially been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a tribute that recognizes the impact he made on film and culture. The ceremony, covered by ABC, drew an emotional crowd as friends, colleagues, and fans gathered to celebrate his legacy.

Director Ryan Coogler spoke at the event, reflecting on Boseman’s brilliance and the privilege of working with him, saying, “There’s something special about being that close to somebody that great.” Viola Davis also shared heartfelt remarks about his talent, discipline, and spirit.

Boseman’s widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, accepted the honor on his behalf, joined by his brothers Derrick and Kevin Boseman.

Boseman first made his mark in films like The Express: The Ernie Davis Story and 42, but it was Black Panther that made him a global icon. His portrayal of King T’Challa reshaped what blockbuster storytelling could look like, inspiring millions around the world.

This star cements what fans have always known, Chadwick Boseman’s legacy isn’t just on screen. It lives in the stories he told, the barriers he broke, and the lives he touched.

Our hearts are with Jamaica. The damage from Hurricane Melissa has been overwhelming, touching families, homes, and entire communities ; including many of our own students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This storm didn’t just disrupt lives; it changed them.

Howard University is coming together to support those rebuilding after the flooding, the outages, and the widespread destruction across Jamaica and the region. When one part of our global family hurts, we show up.

If you’re able, join us in helping provide relief where it’s needed most.

🚨 After 43 days, the government shutdown is officially over.

President Trump signed a funding bill that reopens the government through January 30. The deal reverses worker firings and protects federal employees from layoffs but left out Democrats’ push to extend a health coverage tax credit.

Federal workers can finally breathe again at least for now.
