Proud to share that Back to the Frontier — a series I worked on from 2021 to 2024 as an Executive Cast & Talent Producer — has received a GLAAD Media Award nomination.
Airing in 2025, Back to the Frontier followed three modern American families as they stepped away from 21st-century life to homestead in the 1880s. Living without electricity, plumbing, or modern technology, the families faced the realities of frontier life — growing food, caring for livestock, surviving harsh winters — while discovering resilience, hard work, and the true meaning of community and prosperity. The series offered an immersive look at history while reflecting on modern family life and values.
As a Brit working across international productions, this nomination feels especially meaningful. Authentic representation on screen matters globally — not just in loud or celebratory ways, but also through everyday, lived experience. Both are necessary.
Through the inclusion of a brilliant same-sex family, Back to the Frontier was able to gently explore the often-overlooked history of LGBTQ+ lives in 1880s America. This family was cast for their character, warmth, and charm. Their sexual orientation was not the focus of their story — yet their unique family dynamic naturally added humour, depth, and a fresh perspective to the series. This kind of incidental representation allows audiences everywhere to see LGBTQ+ families simply existing, contributing, and belonging. I knew this family was perfect for the series the moment I found and interviewed them.
