Soul music legend Candi Staton returns to her spiritual roots on this nuanced set of Roots-styled songs she learned as a child such as “Peace in the Valley” done with a quartet shuffle and the chilling “It’s Gonna Rain.” Candi plays piano on the wistful, self-penned track about homelessness entitled, “Reach Down and Touch Heaven.” Then, there are songs she learned as an adult that reminded her of her of her youth such as The Rolling Stones’ “Shine A Light” and Aaron Frazer’s “My God Has a Telephone.” The set closes with the late country star Lari White’s haunting country tune, “In God’s Hands We Rest Untroubled.” Lari sent it to Candi to record but never got to hear Candi’s version herself. Hopefully, Lari is hearing it now.
