When a District resident was a victim of violence, he chose action over fear. As the founder of a DC youth program, he now gives kids a choice of guitars over guns--and he's changing lives, one at a time. bit.ly/19gLIx8

If someone gets mugged at gunpoint, their natural reaction is to become fearful and angry. Strikes and protests are planned at 1,500 Walmart stores around the country tomorrow --mostly because of low wages. The District tried to hold Walmart to its promise of a living wage, but Mayor Vincent Gray and City Council wouldn't stand up for DC workers.

A DC Mic Check article from last year reminds us that Walmart made lots of promises but no firm commitments.

Washington D.C. mayor Vincent Gray sat in bed with the Walmart smiley face, counting their money. Meanwhile, Councilmembers Jack Evans, Yvette Alexander, and Muriel Bowser stood at their bedside, smiling and waving to a crowd that included hundreds of United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) members…

Anne Meador looks into what the future looks like for Manning--both as a soldier convicted of high crimes, and as a trans woman incarcerated in a military prison.

After a court martial lasting more than eleven weeks, Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years on charges including espionage. It’s been a long time in coming. More than three years have passed since his arrest for releasing of a trove of classified documents which, among other things, exposed war…

Federal subcontractors are required by law to meet local minimum wage and benefit laws for their workers. Yet Capital Bikeshare--purveyor of those ubiquitous red bikes for commuters and tourists--has underpaid its workers. Now, as Hillary Lazar reports, employees are putting the pressure on Alta Bikeshare to pay up.

Eighteen Capital Bikeshare employees launched a petition and media campaign to expose how Alta has failed to uphold terms of their federal contracts.

George found NOT GUILTY. Last year as the circumstances of Trayvon Martin's death gained notoriety, there was an outpouring of grief and anger in DC.

Washingtonians gathered on a rainy day to protest the police response to the killing of Trayvon Martin. Citizens held up photos of Trayvon wearing a hoodie outside the D.C. City Council near Freedom Plaza. The crowd numbered several hundred and spilled onto Pennsylvania Avenue. On February 26, Georg...
