First, a big thank you to the local Bakers Delight and their management team for donating leftover bread to our community every week. Your generosity helps those in need, and I encourage everyone to support them in return.
A special shoutout to Brendan Murphy for stepping up, reaching out to local businesses, and organising the bread runs. Thanks to your efforts, we're able to provide for Reservoir Neighbourhood House and even send some all the way to Ballarat, feeding 100 people in need. We'll be doing it again on Tuesday!
I also want to share a thought. Sometimes, it feels like the systems we have in place can make it harder for us to help each other. The bread runs are a great example of people taking initiative, helping the community and reducing food waste. Unfortunately, navigating the bureaucracy to do something like this can be frustrating. Yes we need safeguards, but it feels like some of the rules make it easier for bureaucrats rather than the people they affect.
We're living in a cost-of-living crisis. Society has made progress in many areas, but when it comes to making it easier for us to help each other, it feels like we've taken a step back in some areas.
So what I want to say, apart from thanking Bakers Delight, Brendan and RNH, is that we should be asking different levels of the government about what they are doing to make it simpler for us to support one another at a micro level, as well as the other big macro societal issues.
