On Monday April 8, the Fairfax at Embassy Row hotel in Dupont Circle hosted a cocktail tasting at their American fusion restaurant, The SALLY. The evening featured Pyramid Hotel Group’s Director of New Restaurant Concepts Davide Crusoe, creator of The SALLY cocktail menu, who saluted D.C.’s spring commencement with refreshing beverages and fun, poetic toasts. Invited guests enjoyed cocktails ranging from The Spicy Hemmingway: featuring gin, chile pepper, lime and grapefruit to The Upper East Side Meets Tokyo, a wasabi dusted old fashioned. Executive Chef Ricardo Planas served signature bites including the roasted beet salad with fennel, goat cheese and pistachios and charred orange seared scallops.

The SALLY is the Fairfax’s upscale dining concept introduced during the hotel’s substantial renovation of their ground floor common spaces, which was unveiled in December. Rockwell Group has reimagined the hotel’s ground floor reception, lobby, and dining venues with a “classic elegance meets modern” aesthetic offering a sophisticated multi-functional design. DC locals and out of town visitors can also enjoy breakfast pastries and Swings coffee in the café-style Market or unwind afterhours with ping pong and pool tables in The Nook. The SALLY begins dinner service every night at 5 p.m.

On Friday, October 19, local nonprofit Fair Chance hosted the 16th annual Butterfly Bash at Washington National Cathedral. More than 700 guests and 50 corporate sponsors representing DC’s top financial, real estate and legal firms came together to support education and underrepresented youth in the Washington, D.C. area. Fair Chance recognized Carlos M. Gutierrez, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, for his philanthropic work as the co-founder of TheDream.US scholarship fund. NBC4’s Eun Yang emceed the ceremony and Elisabeth Cohen, Donnell Kearney and Scott Provinse served as this year’s gala co-chairs. Washington National Cathedral was illuminated with flickering, vibrant colors and butterfly imagery, as well as beautiful floral arrangements by Ash to Oak Floristry. Guests sipped cocktails, ate light bites and danced to live music provided by the popular local band Doctor’s Orders. Nearly $120,000 was raised during the 5-minute “Bash Cash” text pledge fundraising competition, which well surpassed Fair Chance’s $100,000 goal. Since 2002, Fair Chance has engaged more than 100 nonprofits and reached 80,000 children, youth and families in Washington, DC.

On Saturday, August 25, 5,000 Washingtonians, donning their favorite summer whites, trekked towards the Navy Yard neighborhood and descended upon Nationals Park for the fifth Diner en Blanc DC, an annual festive event where the DC community comes together. Guests assembled picnic tables, chairs and breathtaking tablescapes throughout the upper and lower concourse levels of the stadium for the sole purpose of sharing a gourmet meal with old and new friends in a beautiful public space. Coldwell Banker of Washington, an event sponsor, conducted the tablescape competition and recognized an all-white curtain display adorned with a gravity-defying unicorn as the winning table design. D3 Staging Specialists of Washington was responsible for decorating the VIP lounge and outfitted the space with chic white furnishings. Dinner officially began with the traditional napkin wave at 6:45 p.m. and diners sipped on Champagne Jacquart and Pedroncelli wine, while munching on homemade picnic ensembles and catered baskets. At 8:30 p.m. the entire stadium lit up as guests decorated the sky with sparklers, marking the end of dinner. The evening continued as hundreds of guests dashed onto the baseball field diamond where a DJ was spinning pop hits. The Diner en Blanc pop-up picnic ended promptly at 10 p.m. Guests packed up their picnic essentials, and left no trace behind. Event planners are already preparing for the sixth annual Diner en Blanc DC next summer.

On Tuesday, July 17, the Washington DC Economic Partnership and the Davis Group hosted a grand tasting for 2018 Diner en Blanc DC at the Atrium of the Old Ebbitt Grill. Guests enjoyed the Diner en Blanc 2018 official sponsored drink, Champagne Jacquart and sampled light fare from the event’s picnic menu. Diner en Blanc is a worldwide epicurean phenomenon that produces a secret picnic every year since 1988, where guests don entirely white attire. This pop-up event will take place on Saturday, August 25 as D.C.’s fifth installment, and Paris’ 30th.
